J.W. Lytle
Charles Rolland, son of John Adalaska and Alcinda Jane (Ehrhardt)
Lytle, was born at Medicine Lodge in 1892. Brothers were George,
Harry and Wilsey.
Alpha Kinney, daughter of William A. and Almeta (Lawry) Kinney
was born in 1907. She with brothers Gilford and Glen and sisters,
Ola and Norma, grew up and attended Grandview School. It was here
that Alpha met Rollie.
Rollie served in France during WWI, Alpha and Rollie were married
in 1925, making their home in Garden City where they engaged in
farming. Their son John William (J.W.) was born in 1926.
They returned to Union Chapel community in 1932, lived on the home
place, farmed the land and cared for his mother until her death.
Rollie loved to sing and often directed Union Chapel choir. He
always kept a good team and enjoyed his cattle and his stock dog.
They milked cows and raised chickens. Alpha's greatest pleasure was
in her kitchen where she loved to try new recipes. She was a wonderful
cook.
Rolland died in 1939 from a ruptured appendix.
J.W. attended Dry Creek school, practically "next door" to their
home. Maurine Allen (teacher) held a special place in their hearts.
J.W. lived with his aunts, Ola and Gene Packard and Norma and Bill
Adams, Plains, Kansas, following his mother's marriage to Charles Bell.
Barbara Dell, daughter of Walter Jonathan and Della Mae (Howes)
Caywood, was born i n1928 at Granby, Missouri. She attended Granby
school with brothers Clyde and Ernest Eugene. After her parents death
(1936-1941), Barbara made her home with Clyde at Plains, Kansas, where
she met J.W.
J.W. worked on his uncle's farm, but often found time to drop by
the drug store where Barbara worked. He joined the Navy in 1944, served
on the U.S.S. Hope hospital ship picking up wounded from the islands
and taking them to base hospitals. He received his discharge in April
1946, at Norman, Oklahoma, and returned to Medicine Lodge, but his
young lady, Barbara drew him back to western Kansas.
Barbara and J.W. were married June 8, 1946 in the Christian Parsonage,
Medicine Lodge. They established their home on West First and J.W.
worked for Kansas Power and Light who transferred him to Ulysses, Kansas,
where a daughter, Sheri Lynne, was born March 7, 1951.
They returned to Barber County that year. He has been employed with
National Gypsum 27 years. Rolland Jay was born October 27, 1955. In 1959
they moved their house from the farm to its present location on North
Main.
Sheri attended the only rural Kindergarten, taught by Ruby Hollar at
Dry Creek. Both Sheri and Rolland completed high school in Medicine
Lodge. Sheri in 1969. She received a Bachelor of Music Education degree
from Emporia State in 1974, taught vocal music at Madison and Emporia.
She now teaches at Coffeyville where she met Jim Milburn, another teacher.
They were married in December, 1978.
Rolland graduated in 1973, and from Friends University in 1977 where
he participated in music, touring Europe with Singing Quakers. He
received an Agri Business degree.
Rolland and Madelyn Sue Ratzlaff, Goessel, Kansas, were married August
20, 1977. Together they managed Bartel's True Value Hardware, Anthony,
Kansas.
Alpha Lytle Bell died in 1976.
J.W. enjoys fishing and he and Barbara are flower and vegetable
gardeners. They worship at The Assembly of God Church.
