John Adalaska Lytle

John Adalaska and Cinda (Alcinda Jane Ehrhardt) raised a family of
four sons in the Medicine Lodge area. Both parents had grown up in
Saline County, Kansas; and accompanied his father, John W. and other
members of the Lytle family to Barber County in 1884. They were
married on April 11, 1883, in Saline County and their four children
were George Vernon, Harry Jay, Wilsey Ray, and Charles Rolland.
Cinda Jane was born October 22, 1860, at West Union, West Virginia,
and came to Salina, Kansas, at the age of eight with her parents. She
died on September 2, 1936. She was a World War I Mother, having one
son in the service. She was always willing to give help to travelers
who came near their place. She was a good cook and made the best pies,
her lemon meringue pies were her specialty.
John was born in Coles County, Illinois, on April 26, 859. He came
to Kansas with his parents when he was a year old. His mother died
when he was seven years old. He was a farmer and raised wheat and other
crops. He had cattle and horses. They owned 920 acres of land in Barber
County. He died in August of 1926. All of their sons were farmers except
Wilsey who was a truck driver and did work a number of other jobs over
the years. They are both buried at the Highland Cemetery.
Their house north of Union Chapel was destroyed in the tornado of 1927,
and the new house was constructed right where the old had been located.
Harry Lyman had eighteen prize mules he was showing to a mule buyer to
sell and brought them over to the home place the day of the tornado and
all of them were killed in the storm.
They really enjoyed their granddaughters, after having only boys of
      their own.
