John MacGregor II

John MacGregor was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland on April 4, 1844,
and came to the United States at the age of 12. When he was 16, he
enlisted in the 19th Indiana Co. "D" of the union army and served as
a drummer boy. He stayed in the army until the end of the Civil War
and in later life was called "The Colonel" by friends who knew his
      devotion to the GAR.
Lucy Ellen Riley was born in Owenton, Kentucky, March 27, 1854 and
married John on March 10, 1870 in Downingsville, Kentucky. They lived
in Washington and Crawford counties in Kansas and several places in
Missouri. In 1886, they and their six children came to Barber County
in a covered wagon and settled on a homestead 30 miles southwest of
Medicine Lodge, on Hackberry Creek near Eldred.
Their nearest neighbors were the families of Christain Keller, John
Blunk, Herman Bailey, and A.B. Jarvis. The MacGregors were staunch
Methodists and as with most pioneer families, most activities were
held in the nearest school house.
In 1893, John made the run into the Cherokee Strip on a fast horse.
Being the second claimant to arrive in the town of Alva, Oklahoma, he
chose two city lots. He later traded the lots for a good horse, which
was considered a good trade, and is an example of comparative values
of land and horses in those days.
In 1894, they moved to Medicine Lodge Township, east of town, where
they developed two choice farms. Then in 1908, they retired to Medicine
Lodge and lived on the corner of Lincoln and Walnut, where the Forsyth
Funeral Home now stands. They lived there until their respective deaths,
John on September 26, 1914 and Lucy on February 6, 1920.
John and Lucy MacGregor had twelve children, two of which died as
children and only one, Jessie, is still living. She was born in Crawford
County, Kansas in 1885 and now lives in Los Angeles, California. Eight
schoollteachers and one able lawyer were the result of John and Lucy's
      union.
