John W. MacGregor
John William MacGregor was born NOvember 5, 1926 in Medicine Lodge
to Riley and Alice Martin MacGregor. He was graduated from Medicine
Lodge High School in 1944 and in 1950 received his Law Degree from
the University of Kansas Law School. He was a member of Sigma Chi
Fraternity and active in the community until his sudden death,
September 26, 1977.
John, known to his friends as Bill, practiced law in Medicine Lodge
with his father, then by himself after Riley's retirement. He served
as County Attorney for thirteen years, acted as Republican County
Chairman and was serving as City Attorney of Medicine Lodge at the
time of his death.
Following in his father's footsteps, Bill raised registered Herefords
on the family farm five miles south of Medicine Lodge. He also took an
active interest in breeding and racing standardbred harness horses, a
practice that the family contined after his death. Bill took part in
the management of harness racing in the midwest by serving as a director
of District 4-A of the United States Trotting Association and was president
of the Heart of America Harness Racing Association.
Bill extended his time to his community in many ways. He was a member
of the Shrine, Masons and St. Marks Episcopal Church. He served for many
years as the president of the Medicine Lodge Indian Peace Treaty Association;
a commitment which spanned 45 years of time and participation. Bill's
quick wit and sense of humor found him acting as emcee and host for many
banquets and gatherings, both in the community and for the many organizations
to which he belonged.
Barbara Hagan was born July 23, 1930 in Emporia, Kansas to John Stanley
and Bernice Ream Hagan. She was graduated from Emporia High School in 1948
and attended the University of Kansas. For many years, Barbara was active
in promoting the Girl Scouts in Medicine Lodge and South Central Kansas.
She served as a leader, was on the neighborhood committee and sat on the
Wheatbelt Girl Scout Council. Barbara helped support and built the new
Lincoln Library for Medicine Lodge, served on the board of the Kansas
Library Association. In 1977, she was appointed by the Governor to the
Kansas Library Advisory Committee.
She is an active member of St. Marks Episcopal Church and Guild of
Medicine Lodge, but takes time out to enjoy her Tennessee Walking Horses
and Standardbred Trotters. She served as secretary of the Heart of America
Harness Horse Association for 20 years and is now serving her community
in the capacity of City Clerk.
John and Barbara were married on March 10, 1951 in the Episcopal Church
of Emporia, Kansas. They moved to Medicine Lodge immediatel thereafter
and have lived in the city ever since.
Four children were born to John and Barbara, two boys and two girls.
John William "Scott" MacGregor II was born in Hardtner, Kansas on
December 15, 1951 and was graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in
1969. He attended the University of Kansas, where he was a Summerfield
Scholar and a member of Sigma Chi Graternity. He worked for the United
States Trotting Association in Columbus, Ohio and also Liberty Bell
Raceway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before returning to Medicine Lodge
in 1977 as Assistant Secretary of the Barber County Savings and Loan.
On April 13, 1979, Scott married Cindy Smith of Cherokee, Oklahoma and
they made their home in Medicine Lodge.
Elizabeth Sue MacGregor was born in Medicine Lodge on May 16, 1956 and
was graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 1974. And the University
of Kansas in 1978. She served as a member and senior manager of the Kansas
Relays Student Committee and was vice president of the Alpha Phi Sorority.
Allison Jean MacGregor was born in Medicine Lodge on January 16, 1960
and was graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 1978. She attended
the University of Kansas, where she is a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and
in 1979 was voted the Outstanding Woman of GSP-Corbin, a residence hall
of 720 women.
Laird Stanley MacGregor was born in Medicine Lodge on May 5, 1966 and
will be a 1984 graduate of Medicine Lodge High School. Laird is active
in school with art and athletics.
