Homer (Pete) Magnison
Homer U. Magnisons, Jr., better known as "Pete" was born September 19,
1928 on the home place where he now lives thirteen miles southwest of
Medicine Lodge. He attended grade school at Blue Ribbon and Dry Creek.
He attended high school in Medicine Lodge. In 1946 he rented his Aunt
Anna Bolser's farm. He started farming and ranching.
On August 1, 1949, he married Ersel Shaddy. Ersel had moved to Barber
County with her parents i 1945. Pete and Ersel's were saddend when their
first son lived only a few hours. Their second son, James Home, was born
on Nobember 3, 1951. Then on September 2, 1955 their third son, Robert
Lynn, was born. Their first daughter, Beverly Jane, was born August 31,
1957. On January 14, 1959 their fourth son, Randall Dean, was born and
on July 24, 1962, their second daughter, Debra Jean, was born. Pete and
Ersel lived on the Bolser place for eighteen years, then moved to the
home place where Pete was born.
All the children attended Dry Creek grade school. As school systems
changed they went into Medicine Lodge grade school in 1969. All the
children have attended Medicine Lodge High School. The four older ones
graduated from Medicine Lodge.
Jimmy attended Panhandle State University, graduating with a degree in
Animal Science in 1973. He married Sharon Shields in May of 1972. They
have a four-year old daughter, Jessica Renee. Bobby attended Dodge City
Community College, graduating in 1975. He now works for Medicine Lodge
Sale Company. After graduating form high school in 1975 Beverly toured
the Pacific Southwest with the Teen Mission Evangelistic Association.
She married Charles Sawyer Jr. in June 1976. Randy attends Garden City
Community College, where he will graduate in May 1979. He is majoring
in Police Science. His future plans are in Law Enforcement. Debbie attends
Medicine Lodge High School where she is a junior.
Pete and Ersel milked cows when they were first married, sometimes as
many as fourteen. As the children got old enough they all helped with the
chores and farm work. The girls and their mother learned how to run the
tractor as well as the boys.
Through the years Pete worked at the different community sale, when he
wasn't busy on the farm. His favorite winter pastime is hunging coyotes
with the greyhounds.
The children were all active in 4-H Club work.
Pete and Ersel feel they are very priviledged and blessed to have lived
and raised their family in the heart of the Gyp Hills.
