Paul Marshall
I am the youngest daughter of Mildred and Curtis Schiff. I was born in
Nashville on December 13, 1945. We lived on a farm east of Medicine
Lodge. I have one brother, Tom Schiff, and three sisters; Shirley Mc
Daniel, Donna Rowe, and Sandy Vandeveer.
I spent my first eight years of school in the old Walstead school east
of Medicine Lodge. The old school house remains on our farm and is used
for family gatherings and 4-H meetings. I graduated from Medicine Lodge
High School in 1963 and received a BS degree from Kansas State University
in 1970.
I met Paul Marshall while attending K. State. He was born November 9,
1943, at Larned and was raised on a farm near Sylvia. He is the son of
John and Lola Marshall.
Paul graduated from K-State in May of 1966, with a BS degree in
agriculture. We were married on August 20, 1966, at the First Babtist
Church in Medicine Lodge.
Our first home was in WaKenney, where Paul was an agent in training
in the Trego County Extension Office. On September 10, we moved to Paola,
where Paul was the 4-H Agent. It was during our brief stay in Paola that
Paul recieved his notice that he had been drafted into the Army. Paul
left for Fort Leonard Wood on November 9, 1966.
While Paul was in the army, I returned to K-State and finished my senior
year. I received a BS degree in Elementary Education.
Paul was sent to Viet Nam for a year in April of 1967. He was fortunate
to have the job of purifying the water for the base camp near Pleiku.
Our first son, John Randall, was born on December 12, 1967, at Medicine
Lodge. He was named for his Grandpa Marshall. Randy was 4 months old when
his Dad saw him for the first time upon his return home from Viet Nam.
We lived in Manhattan while Paul was stationed at Ft. Riley to finish his
time in the army.
In November of 1968 we moved to Marion, where Paul was a 4-H Agent. Our
second son, Curtis Paul, was born at Marion on August 22, 1969. Curt was
named for his Grandpa Schiff.
We left Marion in September 1969 and spent one year on a hog farm near
Dodge City. We returned to Sharon in October of 1970, where Paul worked
for area farmers. It was during that time we purchased 5 gilts so we
could get our start in the hog business.
We moved to the farm in the fall of 1972. It was owned by my parents.
Paul continued to work in town while we increased our hog herd. He started
farming full time in the summer of 1973.
Our third sone, Michael Alan, was born August 13, 1973. Our fourth boy,
Timothy Dean, was born October 5, 1976. During the fall of 1976 we were
able to buy 40 acres where we were living. That allowed us to expand our
hog facilities.
Paul and I are members of the First Baptist Church of Medicine Lodge
and the family attends regularly.
Paul is treausrer of the Extension executive board and secretary of
Barber County Farm Bureau. He is a community leader of the Sunflower
4-H Club.
I am a member of the Sharon Valley EHU and a 4-H leader of the Sunflower
4-H Club. I was a member of this club 10 years and now Randy and Curt are
members.
