I.V. Martin
I.V. Martin was born in 1889 in Indiana and moved withhis parents to
Oklahoma Territory in 1900 settling on Indian land as neighbors of Chief
Left Hand. Chief of the Arapaho Indian tribe. Chief Left Hand, in 1887,
had been one of the original signers of the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty.
In 1906 the family moved by covered wagon to Texas County taking a claim
near Eva northwest of Guymon.
He graduated from high school in 1911 - the first graduating class from
Guymon High School. After serving two years as clerk of the District Court
in Texas County he decided to continue his education and graduated from
Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas in 1917. In 1918 he spent some time
in the U.S. Army serving in the Medical Corps at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Upon
receiving his discharge he turned to the teaching profession. At Leoti,
Kansas he organized the Wichita County High School, the first high school
in Wichita County.
While serving as superintendent at Pawnee Rock, Kansas, he married Leona
Sharpe of Chase, Kansas. They had three children: Maleta Mae, Mary Louise,
and Harry V. In 1924 they moved to Medicine Lodge. She passed away in 1930.
He completed his MS degree in Education at Kansas State in 1926.
I, Bernice Cox Martin was born in Indiana in 1903 and came to Alva,
Oklahoma, with my parents in 1908. I was educated in a one room country
school and Northwestern State Normal where I received my life certificate
in 1921 and began my teaching career.
After teaching in the grades at Nowata and Alva, Oklahoma I went to
Friends University, Wichita, Kansas graduating with an AB degree in 1925.
I.V. Martin hired me that year as Spanish and Latin teacher at Medicine
Lodge High School where I taught seven years. My teaching career there
ended with our marriage June 1, 1921. We had one child, Marjorie Ellen. I
completed an MA degree in Education at the University of Colorado. We
moved to Kinsley, Kansas in 1935 where I.V. was superintendent of schools
until moving to our farm southwest of Alva in 1940.
I returned to the teaching field in 1956 at Rosston, Oklahoma. I.V. joined
me the following year and again we were a teaching pair for four years. He
retired in 1960 but I continued teaching at Kremlin, Fairview, and Carmen,
Oklahoma until retiring in 1970.
We have enjoyed traveling and church and community service. One of our
most delightful trips was to Mexico by train and bus in 1969 where Bernice
had a chance to use her Spanish! That was the language I had taught these
many years. Maleta Mae McGlasson teaches kindergarten in Huntington Beach,
California, Mary Louise (Mrs. R.H. Hazard) is a counselor and teacher in
7th and 8th grades in Huntington Beach. Her husband has retired.
Harry V. Martin lives in Alva and farms extensively in that area. Marjorie
Ellen (Mrs. Richard Heifner) lives in Annadale, Virgnia, and is a school
lunch room supervisor. Her husband is in USDA.
With children from coast to coast we have had opportunities to travel in
visiting them. One of our greatest pleasures is in seeing and hearing from
our former students.
I.V. Martin died March 1979.
