Wayne Martin
Wayne Martin, son of Nute and Elizabeth (Root) Martin was born 3-9-1915
at Forest Ciyt. He was the 6th son, having 5 brothers older and 1 sister
younger than he.
Wayne attended Forest City school. There was lots of traffic around
the Martin home as Wayne had many friends. Wayne helped with the farm
work.
In 1938, Nute Martin died. Wayne took over the farming operation,
continuing to live with his mother. In 1939, he married Evelyn Green,
daughter of Bert and Myrtle (Shepherd) Green. Born 6-5-1920, Evelyn's
girlhood home was Osborne, Kansas until "Depression" years. Then Mr.
Green started carpentering for Warren Mortgaga, moving the family with
his work. They came to Lake City where Evelyn attended high school and
met Wayne. She graduated from Macksville.
Wayne and Evelyn's four children were privileged to grow up on the
farm where their father was born. Betty Joanne was born 1-21-41; Barbara
Jean 9-15-42; John Wayne 7-16-45 and Jay Allen 10-26-46.
The farm being the 'homeplace' for Wayne's family, these children have
many fond memories . Family diners at different homes was a part of
growing up. They remember many good times spent with Grandma Martin,
cousins, aunts and uncles.
One special memory was a trip to Oklahoma for a Root reunion. All the
cousins rode in the back of a pickup, tarped for the trip. Dust blew
going down. Coming back, they perched on the makeshift roost to keep
out of the water in the pickup bed.
Wayne enjoyed his community. He served as a school board member at
Forest City and Mingona school. All four children attended Mingona
school, going on to Medicine Lodge to high school. Wayne served on the
Mingona township board.
Evelyn worked at the Medicine Lodge hospital as a nurse's aide. Also,
did special nursing there and in homes. Having raised her family, she
now had time to pursue her girlhood ambitions.
In 1964 the farm was sold. Wayne and Evelyn bought a home between Pratt
and Iuka. Wayne worked for Pratt County running a road patrol. Evelyn went
to work at the hospital (now Pratt Regional Medical Center), where she is
presently employed.
In 1973, they were in a car accident near Haviland. Wayne died as a
result of the accident. Evelyn moved into Pratt in 1975.
