Ralph Massey
Ralph was raised on the old home place northwest of Sun City, in Turkey
Creek Township. He was born in 1890 and spent his entire life on the ranch.
He died in January, 1944. His parents Joseph and Artha moved there in 1889
and remodeled the house that year. He attended the schools in and around
Sun City and went to Business school in Hutchinson. I was born in Knoxville,
Tennessee in 1893, and came with my parents, John and Florence Cambpell, to
Barber County in 1903. I attended the grade school in Lake City and high
school in Medicine Lodge. Ralph and I were married in 1916. We had three boys
who went to Sun City school and participated in all sports. All graduated
from college, John and Nathan from Kansas State University and David from
McPherson College.
We were always quite active in the Baptist Church in Sun City. Ralph was
on the school board for many years and of course much of community life
centered around our fine schools.
There were many activities that brought the community together and the
fine people there can never be topped anywhere. The community pride was
there from the first moment I arrived in Kansas.
We had our hard years when our crops and livestock weren't worth much but
somehow the mortgage payments were always met. Like everyone else we didn't
have any extras but we seemed to enjoy life trusting that God would give us
another good day tomorrow.
Ralph could laugh and joke our troubles aways so most of our days were
bright and joyful. Nathan was an all state basketball player in high school
and played at K-State until an injury ended his career. John played baseball
at KSU and David played football and wrestled there.
John married Patricia Zellner of Kansas City and they have two daughters,
Janette who graduated from KSU and got her MS from LSU. She and her husband,
Mike Plantz, and daughter, Kristen, live in Houston. Robin has her BS and
MS from Washburn and ESU and is now an area supervisor for Rehabilitation
in Topeka.
Nathan married Eva Mary Larkin and they have a son, Michael, a treasury
agent killed in the line of duty, and Debbie Purcell now of Garden City.
She is western Kansas supervisor for Sears. After Mary's death, Nate married
Ethel Bryant of Ensign.
David married Barbara Green of Pratt and they have three children. Craig
and wife, Sharon, of Hutchinson. Craig is with Cessna. They have a son,
Steven. Kay is a junior at Buhler High School and Jodeen in Hutchinson
Christian High School.
I'm now living in Hutchinson enjoying my friends, my church and my kids,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
