Clayton Mathews

Laura Mae, daughter of Charles and Elsie N. Peck Pemberton, was born
March 19, 1894, in Beaver County, Oklahoma, on Crooked Creek on a claim
     staked by her father.
Clayborn Delbert, son of Silas and Gladys Elsie Sweet Mathews, was born
September 4, 1887, in Lincoln County, Kansas. He travelled with his parents
and four brothers in a covered wagon to Cici, Oklahoma, where they made
their home for one year. They returned to Lincoln County and lived for
three years before returning to Vici to the same claim they had held.
C.D. staked a claim two miles east of Pemberton claim in Township 6 in
the northwest corner of Beaver County. He built a dugout and lived there
two years. Their oldest son, Olen Marion, was born July 10, 1914. The
family then moved to Dewey County, Oklahoma, where Gladys Elsie was born
September 11, 1916. They lived there for three years before returning to
     the homestead.
In 1916 they bought a house in Englewood, Kansas, and moved it eight
miles southwest of Englewood and lived there until 1920. Arlie Linn was
     born April 8, 1919.
In the spring of 1920, they traded the claim to J.C. Lowery for a quarter
section of land northeast of Knowles. They moved the house. It was taken
down over the hill and across the Cimaroon with 24 head of horses and mules
hitched to it. They had a man witch for water and set the house down near
that spot. They lived there 14 1/2 years and always had plenty of good water.

Harvey Leon, July 25, 1921; Archie Robert, March 8, 1924; Clayborn Edwin,

Leslie and his dad drove two teams with wagons loaded with machinery and
came to a farm seven miles east of Sharon in July of 1934. In September,
they returned to Knowles and moved the family to Kansas. On March 1, they
moved to a farm on the Barber-Harper County line near Sharon.
Olen remained at Englewood where he worked on a ranch. Harvey stayed in
Capron where he lived and worked with Roy Pierce. He came to Sharon in
September, 1935. Vera Iona was born December 6, 1935, on the farm near
Sharon. Olen came to Sharon in 1936.
The family lived there until 1944, when they moved to Wichita where C.D.
worked for Boeing until he retired. They continued to make their home in
Wichita. They celebrated their 62nd. anniversary before Laura passed away
