Ellis Mayfield
With World War Two being over just a little over a year, a young man
joined the service to learn a little about the world. Little did he
know that he was going to be sent to Vienna, Austria, to join the
military forces occupying Vienna at that time.
After of few months of Army life in Vienna, hemet a young girl and
was willing to give it a try to have a few dates with her, but as
neither spoke the other's language, it looked like hard times ahead.
But after all obstacles and misunderstandings, and learning sign
language, somehow he must have gotten across to her that he wanted to
marry her, but Trudy Mafield found herself standing beside Ellis
Mayfield in front of a justice of the peace, and an English and German
interpretor saying "yes" in both languages. And again after coming to
America in the Catholic Church, in order to make the marriage valid.
They came in December of 1948 to Medicine Lodge and set up house-
keeping and after three years, August 3, 1951, a little baby boy,
Dennis, joined them and for five years ruled his mom and dad with a
smile and dimple in his chin.
But, September 23, 1956, they opened their hearts and house to
another boy, David, and again March 3, 1960 to Derek.
Three boys; Ellis kept wondering where the girls were.
June 9, 1961, his wish came true, Anita was born, Angela, August 23,
1963 and Alison, December 10, 1965.
They did even it out; three boys and three girls.
Many years have passed since the meeting in Vienna, Austria, and
many memories will always be with them, but they have found a home in
Medicine Lodge, and they are glad to raise their children in this
community, and maybe one day, their children will do the same.
