Verl E. (Mac) McAdams
I was hired by the Medicine Lodge public school system to teach
vocational agriculture in the Medicine Lodge High School. I served
from jJuly 1, 1928 to March, 1934. I was a graduate of Kansas State
Agricultural College in 1928.
When the Barber County Farm Bureau and the Cooperative Extension
Service in Barber County were organized in 1934, I became the first
agricultural agent in the county. My duties consisted of conducting
educational programs in the interest of the farm programs as well
as in agricultural production, organizing home demonstration units
and 4-H Clubs for boys and girls.
An agricultural agent in the county was a new experience for many
people. Some were skeptical, while others were receptive and appreciative.
The new, young county agent did not tell old timers how to farm as some
feared. I worked and lived with and among them. The extension program
expanded.
I chose a Barber County girl, Louise Magnisons, for my bride. We were
married in Medicine Lodge, June 30, 1935. Our daughter, Shirley Lou,
was born in Medicin Lodge. Our daughter, Janet Kay, was born in Great
Bend.
Louise, Shirley, and I were transferred to Great Bend, Barton County,
Kansas, December 1, 1939. I served Barton County until 1947 and was then
transferred to Dickinson County, serving there until 1952. I then moved
to the Kansas State Extension Office, Kansas State University, Manhattan,
and served as livestock extension specialist until January 31, 1971, when
I retired.
