Floyd (Speck) McCune
My father, Winnie Floyd, arrived in Barber County in 1901 with his
parents, Sarah Elizabeth (Stout) and James Alva McCune, and 3 brothers,
Joseph, Murl, and Emil. He was born November 1, 1894, at Green City,
Missouri. After living near Sharon two years, the McCunes bought a
farm 2 3/4 miles east of Medicine Lodge. Upper grades at Walstead School
were cut short Fall and Spring by harvesting and planting. Floyd worked
on the farm with father and for hire elsewhere, including cowboying in
the area, particularly on the Skinner Ranch.
In 1917 Floyd went into the Army, took basic training at Camp Funston,
Fort Riley. He served with 353rd Infantry, 89th Division in France and
Germany, part-time as Foot Courier, and Army of Occupation until mid-year
1918.
March 30, 1920, he married Viola Mae Crick (Probate Judge Garrison
presiding), daughter of Lou Ollie (Hittle) and David William (Sam) Crick.
She was born February 13, 1900, in Sumner County and moved to Barber
County as a child. She attended Soles School and Medicine Lodge Secondary
School. She studied nursing, serving under local doctors, including
Gilbert.
Three sons were born: James David, September 4, 1921, in farmhouse
1/2 mile north of Riverside Church; Wayne Roya, February 3, 1924, at
Grandfather McCune's in Medicine Lodge; Dallas Floyd, June 6, 1926, in
the old Doles house 1/2 mile west of Riverside Church. During these
years father worked for Henry Abt.
1927 brought series of moves for father to find work: Hazelton, where
I started school; Kiowa, Fred Gillig Farm Southwest Kiowa, 1928-29;
Axline Ranch, 1929-30; and Earl Holmes, 1930-33, in old Riley House where
we sons all still feel we had roots in Union Chapel community. Wayne and
Dallas began school at Elwood. Next we lived in Medicine Lodge, then in
Benefiel House near North Star School, wher eI graduated from elementary.
Next few years were another series of moves with dad doing anything he
could find to support his family, and mother always growing, gathering,
and canning domestic and wild fruits, vegetables, and meats. More fortunate
than many those lean years, we never went hungry or lacking warm clothing
and abundant loving care.
November, 1939, mother died. Dad continued various work and finally took
the Railway Express and Freight route and bought Franklin Eby House in town.
All three sons enlisted in Navy in World War II.
About 1948 father moved to Niangua, Missouri, and in 1951 married Mrs.
Julia Owens. They later moved to Wichita, where he worked at Boeing. In
November 1957, Juliea died, and in 1958 a heart attack forces his retirement.
February, 1962, he died in California while visiting me. Mother and dad are
buried in Highland Cemetery in the McCune plot.
Now in 1979, James lives in Gardena, California, an Electrical Engineer
graduating from Kansas State, employed by City of Los Angeles. Dallas lives
in Artesia, California, retired due to health. Wayne lives in Wichita and
works at Beech Aircraft.
