James D. (J.D.) McCune

On September 4, 1921, I was born in an old farmhouse about 1/2 mile
north Riverside Church, eldest child of Viola Mae (Crick) and Winnie
Floyd (Speck) McCune and given the name James David, taken from my
two grandfathers, James Alva McCune and William David (Sam) Crick.
Due to changing work, the family moved to Hazelton in 1927 where
     I started school, start of a series of schools: Fall 1927, Hazelton;
Spring 1928, Kiowa - First Grade; Mulberry Center, Alfalfa Co.,
Oklahoma - Second; Eldred, North of Medicine Lodge - Third; Elwood,
     near Union Chapel - Fourth through Sixth; Medicine Lodge - Seventh;
North Star - Eight, graduating from Barber County Rural Schools, May
1935. I attended MLHS, graduating May, 1939. I majored in agriculture
and was active in Future Farmers of America, also was on Crop and
Livestock Judging Team in state competition in Kansas State. One year
I was sponsered to Boys State by the local American Legion Post, a
     memorable experience.
My parents raised me in the Christian Church, where I was active in
youth activities. Some of my fondest memories are Union Chapel church
and community. All had a strong influence on all my live.
I enlisted in Navy Reserve, September 9, 1942, receiving Boot Camp
at Great Lakes. Additional training included Electronics School at
Purdue University and Gyro Compass School at Treasure Islane, California,
before boarding the USS OMAHA at Bahia, Brazil, September, 1943. The
ship served in South Atlantic Fleet on patrol and escort duty and in the
Southern France Invasion with Mediterranean Fleet. Major ports of call
were Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, San Juan, Miami, Brooklyn,
Gibraltar, Palermo, and Naples. I was discharged December 24, 1945.
I enrolled at Kansas State, January, 1946, obtaining an Electrical
Engineering Degree, January, 1950. After traveling as electrical salesman,
I moved to Medicine Lodge, working at National Gypsum.
While in college, I married Joy Ryan, daughter of Adaline (Clark) and
John Edward Ryan at Medicine Lodge Christian Church, December 25, 1946.
David Lee was born at Manhattan, August 28, 1948; Floyd Edward at Medicine
Lodge, September 26, 1950; and Karen Sue at Inglewood, California, December
20, 1953. (I now have five grandchildren.) We moved to Los Angeles in
     September, 1952.
I joined Loyal Order of Moose, 1955, and have served in lodge offices
(Governor 1958-59), district offices (District President 1964-65),
National Convention Committee 1965, State Association Committees (Publicity -
four years), and on Ritual Staff and chairman many years. I was awarded
Fellowship Degree for service to the Order.
I married Mrs. Mildred (Micky) Louise (Paschall) Morris at Christian
Church, Torrance, California, May 21, 1966. She had a daughter, Freida
Ann, and a son, Frederick. (She now has four grandchildren.) We live in
Mobile-home in Gardena, California. All our children live near, except
Freida, with soldier husband on assignment in Australia.
In California I worked for AiResearch Manufacturing as engineer and
supervior seventeen years and now with City of Los Angeles as electrical
design engineer. Engineering has rewarded me well financially and, more
     important, with satisfaction of accomplishment.
