Ernest McDaniel

Ernest McDaniel (died 1962) and his wife, the former Flora Taylor (died
1976), were married in Lindsey, Montana, on September 25, 1915. Later they
moved to Barber County, six miles northeast of Sharon, where they lived
for 52 years. Ernest operated 1000 acres, which he rented and leased. The
farming was done in early days with mules and horses which he raised and
broke himself. He had two barges and ran a header crew to harvest his
wheat. Their first house was made of rock. They later built a new home
3/4 of a mile farther north.
This union was bless with six children - Virgil, Harry, Paul, Vernon,
Rose, and Bob. The older boys walked or rode horseback to Joint or Dist.
#40 rural school and also rode horses to high school. Sports played an
important part in their life. In 1935 Virgil was one of the starting five
on the basketball team that won first place in state competition. Virgil
graduated from Northwestern State Teachers College in Alva, Oklahoma.
There he met Ruth Weber, whom he later married. They make their home in
Alva, where he farms and works for the local gas company. They are the
parents of two sons - Darrel, an architect, and Stanley, a high school
      teacher.
Harry married the former Imogene Bonham. He farmed in the Zenda and
Argonia area for a number of years. They now live in Eureka, Kansas.
Their two daughters, Janet and Karen, are Home Economics Agents.
Paul met his wife, Eloise Murray, in Alva, where he attended college.
During World War II, he was captured on the second day of the Battle of
the Bulge and held in a German prison camp for five months. Upon returning
home, he moved to Seiling, Oklahoma, where he is now retired from the locker
business and is a farmer. Their daughters, Carolyn and Paula, each have
      two children.
Vernon is the only son remaining in Barber County. He married his high
school sweetheart, Rachel McKeever, in 1943. They have made their home
on a farm 3 1/2 miles east of Sharon for 31 years. They attend the Christian
Church in Sharon, where Vernon is an elder and board member and Rachel is a
      Sunday School teacher.
Rodney, their eldest, married Martha Shelite in 1972. They both are
graduates of Fort Hays State College. They have two daughters, April and
Amber. Rod farms, and Martha is a substitute teacher. They also attend
Sharon Christian Church, where Rod is church treasurer.
Howard, their second son, graduated from Pittsburg VoTech School. He
married Carol Johnson. They have a son, Jamie, and a daughter, Stacey.
Howard is employed in Wichita by Buckley Inc. Mechanical Contractor, as
      an air conditioning service man.
Julie, their daughter, is a junior at Friends University, majoring in
Business. She is a member of the Singing Quakers. Her summer plans for
1979 include touring the United States and several foreign countries to
spread the gospel in music with the Continental Ministries.
Rose Marie, the only daughter of Ernest and Flora, passed away in 1935,
at the age of six after a short illness.
Bob, their youngest son, married Joyce Basinger. He was part of the
baskeball team that won second in State in 1949. They make their home
now in Cheney, Kansas, where Bob farms and owns and Ice and Locker Plant.
His three sons are all married. Mark farms and owns a Dairy Bell, Marshall
