Glenn McGee
Glenn A. McGee and wife, Leota F. (Toeliner), came to Medicine Lodge,
Kansas, the summer of 1956.
Glenn was born and raised at Kirtland, New Mexico. He graduated in
1940 and moved to Los Angeles, California, to attend Printer's Trade
School. He later worked at Eastern Columbia until he went into the U.S.
Coast Guard in 1942. He spent time in the South Sea Islands and Australia
and returned to Los Angeles, October, 1945.
He met and married Leota November 29, 1945. Leota was born and raised
in Ellis County, Oklahoma. She graduated from Fargo High School in 1940
and later went to California, where she was a Bell Telephone operator at
Hawthorne.
Glenn received his discharge February 12, 1946, and they moved to
Woodward, Oklahoma, where he was employed. They survived the 1947 Woodward
tornado. Their daughter, Glanda Kay, was born in Woodward August 25, 1947.
In 1951 Leota and Glenn moved to Ellis County, Oklahoma. Due to health
problems and the drought, Glenn came to Medicine Lodge in July, 1956. He
was employed by National Gypsum. The family joined him in August and lived
on First Street, then West Central, then the Jeff Long house on South Main.
Housing was scarce. In 1965 they bought the property of Ed Jones at 405
West Third - (Cookie Ed, the boys called him).
Ronald was adopted in 1963, and Roger in 1965. Glenda was first Runner-
up in the Miss Barber County Scholarship Pageant in 1965. She graduated
from Medicine Lodge High School in 1965, then from Wesley School of Nursing,
Wichita, Kansas, in 1968. Glenda worked a year at Medicine Lodge Memorial
Hospital, then moved to Provo, Utah, in 1970. She married Larry Mackay of
Montezuma, Kansas, August 28, 1970, in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City,
Utah. They now reside on a farm at Montezuma, Kansas.
The McGees are quite active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints, Pratt, Br., where they've held many jobs. Leota teaches Seminary
and Social Relations classes at Pratt through the church and BYU. She is
a member of Pleasant Hill EHU, and VFW Auxiliary. Glenn is a member of
VFW Post 7625.
The McGees raise a large garden and have fruit trees. They enjoy sharing
the produce with neighbors. Medicine Lodge has become home to them, and
the many friends here are treasured above all else.
