Bert McGuire

Bert was born December 8, 1909, in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, to Mr. and Mrs.
Isaac McGuire. He was delivered by Dr. Gilbert. Mrs. McGuire passed away while
a younger sister, Margaret, was quite small. Bert and his sister were raised
by their father and Grandmother, Jane McCoy. Bert attended school in Medicine
Lodge. He lived part of his childhood in Arkansas and Missouri, attending
school in both states. Bert became a minister of the Assembly of God Church.
He traveled to various towns, holding revivals for the church. He came back
to Medicine Lodge for a revival and met Louise Colborn.
The second daughter of George and Euella Fife Colborn, Louise was born
August 5, 1910. Louise was also delivered by Dr. Hardin Gilbert. Louise and
her sisters, Pansy Alice, Thelma Gertrude, and Mary Elizabeth, attended
Sunflower School District #34. Louise remembers many of her teachers -
Margaret Wright, Edna Drury, Anna Carpenter, Leone Powell, Mildred McCracken,
and Cora Warren. Louise and her sister, Thelma, ran trap lines for spending
money. They helped their father with the horses and farming.
The McGuires had eight children: Margaret Alice, Marjorie Elizabeth, Bertha
Louise, Gertrude, Naomi Pearl, Victor Bert, Everett Leon, Walter Eugene, and
Hazel Eilene. Naomi was born on Louise's 30th birthday and delivered by Dr.
Gilbert in Louise's childhood home. The oldest son, Victor, was killed in an
automobile accident. He and his wife had three children. There are 10 grandsons,
11 granddaughters, and one great grandson for the McGuires. Everett and Walter
have served their country in the U.S. Army.
Bert and Louise spent several years operating Help-Yourself-Laundries in
Anthony, Pratt, and Hutchinson, Kansas. They moved to Arkansas from Hutchinson
and have retired at Willford, Arkansas. They have six acres of ground on which
there are spring fed ponds, a nice garden, and orchard area. They have built
a new house recently. Louise and Bert have done most of the inside work on the
house, layuing the hardwood floors and making cabinets. Louise enjoys piecing
quilts and quilting in her spare time.
