George McGuire

George McGuire, eldest of Michael and Belle McGuire, was born near Columbus
Junction, Iowa. When he was four years old, his parents moved to Barber County,
Kansas. He was a devout Christian and student of the Bible all his life. He
could always be depended upon to attend Sunday services at the Church of God,
which was founded by his parents and half-brothers. If the weather was bad,
George would walk across the fields in the early Sunday morning to light the
fire so that the building would be war when the neighbors arrived for Sunday
  school.
George McGuire rarely wrote a letter that did not have Bible quotations
interspersed through it. He also gave many well known quotations such as the
following which was taken from one of his letters, "When we heard about Mrs.
Cynthia Brigg's death, we were sorry. Her life was well spent. So many boys
and girls were well trained by her head, heart, and hand. 'Guard well thy
thoughts, thy thoughts are heard in heaven.' is a line she gave her pupils to
  copy.
George married Minnie Freitag, and they were the parents of seven children.
Both Grandpa George and Grandma Minnie were school teachers in one room school
houses. They were both well read and great believers in education. One never
saw George without a book in his pocket. He would get up at any hour of the
night to read or look at the stars. He picked up odd rocks.
George and Minnie both liked to garden. Petunias of all colors were always
part of the garden. Watermelons were choice. He had arthritis so bad in his
knees and arms, but he'd put a whopper in his gunny sack which he'd take to
the patch, and some how get it to the house.
When I married his son, Donald, we lived with them for about six months
and never an unkind word was said about anyone. That is living your religion.
Geroge and Minnie are buried in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.
