Willam O. McGuire
My parents had very different childhoods, growing up in Barber County. My dad, better
known as Billie, or Bill, grew up in Isabel. Born in October of 1915, Bill was the only
child of Jay and Flavia McGuire. He and his parents lived across the street east of the
Methodist Church in Isabel. Mother, the former Marjorie Watkins, grew up on a farm east
of Medicine Lodge with her parents, Willard and Ada Watkins, her older sister, Ila, and
two younger brothers, Homer and Wilbur.
Dad attended twelve years at Isabel Schools. He finished high school in 1935, and
that year the family moved to Medicine Lodge to be closer to the shop. Dad worked
around some and then went to college one year at Hays.
Mother attended grade school at North Antelope rural school. There were seldom more
than 8 students in this school. Three families were always there: the Weidner's - Robert,
Roy, and Donald; the Hybsha's - Helen and Dorothy; and the Watkins - Ila, Marjorie, Homer
and Wilber. Others came and went but those three families stayed. Mother felt very
fortunate that Roy and Dorothy were in her grade all eight years.
Mother went to high school at Medicine Lodge, then took the county exams for teachers,
and started her career as a teacher. She taught in rural, and then she and Dad both went
to Wichita to work in the defense plants.
They were married in 1943, returned to Medicine Lodge in 1945, and Dad went into the
welding business with his dad. My brother, Jim, was born in 1951, and I (Linda) in 1954.
We lived at 400 North Walnut in Medicine Lodge until August of 1960, when Dad and Pop sold
the welding shop.
We moved to Liberal, Kansas, where Jim and I went through school. Mother taught in
Southlawn Elementary, and Dad worked in a welding shop. My parents moved to Ulysses in
1973, where they still make their home. They plan to retire in Medicine Lodge. Jim is
married and has two children, and I am also married and have two children.
