John Nicholas McKeever
John N. McKeever and his wife, the former Mary Laura Clough, came from Iowa by
way of Danville, Kansas, to Barber County in 1884, settling four miles south of
Sharon. Their small daughter, Nora, accompanied her parents.
Nine other children were born on the homestead; they were Ira, Earl, Genieve,
Huston K., Florence, Ray, Roy, Lois, and Cecil. The children attended a country
school two miles from their home.
As a young farmer and rancher, John could have been seen herding cattle on
the open range near Deerhead. He was a stockholder in the Sharon Valley State
Bank. In November, 1933, John was fatally injured while drilling wheat, when
the horses ran away, throwing him from the drill.
Each of the children married. Nora wed Bert Matthews and had one daughter.
Nora later married Sam Hall.
Earl married Ruby Cole, daughter of Sam Cole; they lived in Oklahoma and
Texas and had five children.
'Nev' (Genieve) married R.H. Whelan, and Florence wed Joe Whelan (brothers).
Each had four children. Nev resides in Medicine Lodge.
H.K. and Cecil remain in Sharon. H.K. married Blondell Fair; they have two
daughters. Cecil is married to Hosephine HOlman and had one son. H.K. is the
oldest continuous resident of Sharon community.
Ray married Oma McDaniel, daughter of Lee McDaniel; they had two children
and live in Oregon.
