A.W. McKinley
A.W., then an eighteen-month-old baby, came with his parents, Robert and Celia
McKinley, two brothers, Charles and William, by covered wagon from Vincennes,
Indiana. In the party was also Mrs. McKinley's sister and her husband. They all
homestaeded in Kiowa County, Kansas, four miles south of what is now Greensburg,
Kansas. Three other children were born to the McKinleys, Carrie, John, and Arthur.
The rigorous life of the west was too much for the sister and her husband. After
four or five years, they sold their homesteads to A.W.'s father and went back to
Indiana. It was here that A.W. grew up, received his early education, and left
from there to attend the University of Kansas where he received degrees in
chemistry and pharmacy. The other boys attended K.U. also. Charles was an M.D.,
John, a college professor; William and Art, business majors; and Carrie attended
Bethany at Lindsborg to become a secretary. The land has remained in the McKinley
name all the while, but none of them were farmers. They attribute this to the
horsedrawn walking cultivators that they walked behind from 6:00 AM to noon, then
their father would say and execute....."while you rest, we'll hoe the potatoes."
A.W. was an active practicing pharmacist for 60 years, most of that time in
his own store in Greensburg. Twenty three of those years were spent as a pharmacist
in the Hibbard Rexall store in Medicine Lodge.
In 1909 A.W. married Vinnie Lyon. She died shortly after their children, Marjorie
and Victor were born. In 1927 A.W. and Jennie (Thrasher) were married. Jennie taught
in the Greensburg schools, and they were there until they sold the business and went
to Canon City, Colorado. This was during the dust bowl days and the Depression. Jennie
taught in the Canon City schools after they moved there. In 1942 the McKinleys came
to Medicine Lodge with their children, Virginia, Burt, and Douglas. The children
received their elementary and high school education in the Medicine Lodge schools.
Virginia graduated from Fort Hays State University, with majors in business and
biological science. Burt graduated from Fort Hays State University and took his
law degree from K.U. Doug graduated from K.U. with a major in electronics. Virginia
is the wife of W. Clifford Johnson, a part time secretary, and full time housewife
and mother of two college boys. burt is a practicing attorney at Sublette, Kansas.
His wife is the former Jan Shaw, and they have Mike, a freshman at Oral Roberts U.,
Casey, High school student, and Kerry, a seventh grader. Douglas is with EE Company,
Dallas, Texas. His wife is the former Joanne Fulton of Harper. They have Patrick,
a graduate of Texas A&M, Timothy, a High school student, and Dennis.
Jennie taught in the Barber County schools and later became County Superintendent,
a position she held for twenty-five years. She retired in 1969.
The McKinleys were alwasy active in church, community, civic and political
activities. The children, all five, follow in the same footsteps.
A.W. died October 2, 1968. Jennie resides in the home in Medicine Lodge.
