Ival Wayne (Pete) Mease

Ival Wayne (Pete) Mease was born 1-22-28 near Nashville, Kansas. His
parents were Ira Jacob (Sam) Mease and Bernice Lee Meeks. He had five
sisters. Pete went to school at Cream Valley for two years and then the
school consolidated with Isabel where he graduated in 1945.
Peggy Jean Axtell was one of 3 living children born to James Harvey
Axtell and Goldie Elizabeth Mills. She was born 7-21-27 at Medicine Lodge.
She attended school at Lake City until the school closed in 1943. Since
there weren't any school buses at this time, she lived with her grandmother,
Harriet Mills, in Medicine Lodge while finishing school there. She graduated
     in 1945.
Pete and Peggy met through mutual relatives. Peggy was working for Jane
Kimsey who was married to Pete's cousin, Glen Mease. They were married May
     14, 1946 at Pratt, Kansas.
They have four daughters. Patty Ann born 5-19-1947, Barbara Sue 11-22-1949,
and twins Sandra Kay and Debra Kay 2-29-1952.
The Meases farm and operate 2300 acres of land of which they own 880 acres.
They also raise cattle and hogs which helped put their girls through college.
In 1963 they bought 720 acres of pasture land west of Medicine Lodge. The
land was formerly owned by Peggy's grandmother, Harriet Mills.
Although there were no boys in the family, there have been numerous nephews
who have spent the summer months with us for the past 20 years. They all
learned to drive a tractor and have been a big help with the farm work.
The girls had begged their dad to teach them to drive the tractor, but it
took several years before they persuaded him to let them learn. They then
insisted on driving a tractor without a cab so they could get a good suntan
at the same time. Now that the girls are gone from home, Peggy has learned
to drive the tractor although she insists on having a cab on hers.
Harvest seems to be a favorite time of year for us. It is a good example
of how work can also be fun and pleasurable. Holidays are also special for
us as they bring the whole family together which now includes 3 granddaughters
     and 2 grandsons.
Pete served on the school board at Isabel for 11 years. He has been a county
commissioner for the past 6 years.
