Earl Miller

My parents were James and Sarah Hariet Lynn Elgin, both were born in Indiana.
James and his twin sister, Maggie, were born in Claysville, Washington County,
Indiana, March 15, 1850. There were 15 children. His wife, Sarah Hariet was born
at Livonia, Indiana, a family of 12 children. These towns were 10 miles apart but
they never met until they were grown.
My father rode horseback to Lawrence, Kansas in 1871 and liked it. They were
married December 18, 1873. Two children were born, Argus Harlan and me, Alta
Irene. We were always very close to them.
They came by covered wagon to Kansas, arriving in August 1882 and stopped at
Anthony, Harper County. He went to work hauling lumber from Harper to Anthony.
He soon preempted a quarter of land 2 miles west of Hazelton, no roads west of
town, only buffalo trails across the prairie. They built a house and moved to the
land January 1890. They lost the farm because of a loan taken out to build the
house and hard times hit, corn was 10 cents a bushel and labor was 1 dollar a day.
We lived on rented farms around Hazelton. He was a Baptist, she was a Presbyterian.
After a school house was built they had Sunday School in them. Sunday afternoons.
Father was a Sunday School Supt., mother taught a class.
Earl Harley Miller was born February 22, 1885 at Fisher, Illinois. When he was
21, he came to Hazelton. We were married April 24, 1910. I was born July 17, 1887
at Anthony. After we were married we purchased a farm near my parents, they thought
they were to old to live alone, we lived with them. On November 7, 1916 we and my
parents moved to Hazelton. My mother died April 1, 1932 and father died at 91 in
  1941.
Earl's father taught him the carpenter trade and made him help build houses
and churches till he was 21, when he came to Kansas. His pareents moved to Kansas
October 1906 and they built farm homes for Mr. Horton and Walter Maddox. Earl
worked at different lines of work, the last few years he was a Rural Mail Carrier.
I attended Fairview country school, two other country schools and last at
Hazelton when they only had 9th grade school. Ira Stout was my teacher in 1902. I
also educated myself by reading and traveling. I attended 2 world fairs, St. Louis
in 1904 and Seattle in 1952.
We had five children, Alta Theta married Robert Raibourn, Harley Elvin married
Emma Lou Farney, Kenneth Argus married Mary Sue Beeber, Myron Wayne married Wilma
Dean Anthony, Thelma Earlene married Melvin Rogers. We have 16 grandchildren and
 13, great-grandchildren.
We moved to Kiowa in August 1960 and Earl lived only 10 days, our daughter Alta
died 6 week later of cancer, Septmeber 1960.
I moved to Graham, Texas, January 4, 1978 to be close to my two children, Earlene
and Kenneth who both live at Graham. On February 26, 1978 I moved to the Garden
Terrace Nursing Home where I have a nice private room. I will be 92 years on July
 17, 1979.
