Louis Maxmillian Miller
Louis Maxmillian Miller was born May 15, 1860 in Holenstein-Ernsttal,
Germany. After serving in the German army he apprenticed as a tailor.
He married Otellia Bertha Helena Gorgas (born in Stettin, Germany,
October 10, 1864) and after a few years moved to London, England and
started a tailor shop in the year 1885. Eventually he became the royal
tailor to the King and Queen of England. They had five children: Alfred,
Felix, Gertrude, Ella and Lillie.
Ella Miller, while studying in Germany, met a handsome German army
officer named Oswald Karl Meckel. After Oswald Meckel's discharge from
the German army he came to Barber County, Kansas in 1907. In May of 1913,
Ella Miller came to the USA and married Oswald Meckel. They lived on a
farm about seven miles west of Kiowa and moved to Medicine Lodge, Kansas
in 1922.
The Louis Maxmillian Miller family, along with sons, Felix and Alfred,
came from London, England to Medicine Lodge in 1914 and started a family
tailor shop called L.M. Miller Expert Tailor Shop. He was a successful
business man until he died in 1935. His son, Alfred, who was also an
expert tailor, had a successful tailor shop in Kiowa, Kansas. Alfred's
wife, Gladys Howe, an English immigrand, was an able assistant to her
husband in their Kiowa tailor shop. They had no children. Gladys died
in 1969. Alfred is still living in Kiowa and is the only survivor of the
Miller family.
L.M. Miller died in 1935 and his wife, Helena, died in 1938, both are
buried in Medicine Lodge Cemetery.
This Germany family is an excellent example of how industrious immigrants
made their meaningful contribution to our American socio-economic society.
