Percy Miller
Percy and I met in Sharon, my hometown, in the fall of 1925 after he
came to Sharon to teach and coach in the high school there. He was the
son of George and Fern Miller of Sawyer. He had graduated that spring
from Friends University where he had enjoyed a successful athletic
career as a member of their football, track, wrestling, and baseball
teams. He had worked his way through Friends by delivering newspapers,
washing dishes at Wolf's Cafeteria, and following the harvest during
the summer. He taught four years in Sharon.
We were married Sunday, June 16, 1929, a week after I graduated from
Southwestern. We started housekeeping in Hazelton that fall where Percy
was to teach for the next 3 1/2 years. I was hired as a study hall
supervisor and substitute teacher. In 1936, Percy obtained his Master's
Degree from Wichita University.
Hazelton had many sports fans and there was a rousing athletic contest
of some kind almost every night during basketball and baseball seasons.
The gymnasium was comfortably heated, but there was no hot water, so the
players had to take cold showers in the winter. That didn't cool their
enthusiasm, however.
Those were the years of the Great Depression, Dirty Thirties, and March
6, 1933, when President Roosevelt closed all United States banks for four
days.
Our daughter, Corinne, was born November 5, 1930. She attended the
Hazelton School until we moved to Medicine Lodge in 1942 where Percy
taught various high school subjects and coached football, basketball, and
track teams for 15 years. He was in the International Harvester business
with my father, Lloyd Davis, and my brother-in-law, Lynn Randels, for
another 11 years. I substituted in the Medicine Lodge School then began
full time teaching in 1955.
Corinne graduated as an Honor Woman from Wichita University in 1952.
She was named in the 1952 Book Student College Leaders. She and Ron
Davis, son of Bert and mabel Davis, were married November 39, 1952.
Corinne taught Business Commerce in Rose Hill, North High in Wichita,
and Kansas City's Wyandotte High School while Ron attended Wichita
University and Dental School at the University of Missouri at Kansas
City. Ron received his DDS degree in 1959 and has practived dentistry
in Wichita since that time. They have three sons: Mark, Alan, and Steven.
Percy and I are both retired from teaching. He taught 33 years and I
taught 18 years - all in Barber County. Percy continues his farming
activities, enjoys traveling, and still retains a keen interest in sports
of all kinds.
