Temple Mills

Tempel Mills and Mima D. Mills enjoyed good times together, going to dances,
picture shows, and picnics with Bill and Eva Mills, Norman Draper, Roger Mills,
Fred Larkin, and my parents, the Lew Drapers.
I went to Lake City High School and there wre many activities. I stayed in
Lake City with my grandparents, Mr. aNd Mrs. W.H. Draper. Thelma Hartley was in
high school, staying with my grandparents also. Merlin Lahey was her very good
friend. Eva Draper Mills was teaching school in Comanche County, but spent
weekends in Lake City or in the Deerhead community, where my parents lived on
  the Flintum Ranch.
I graduated from Lake City High School in 1923 as Valedictorian. On April 9,
1924, Tempel and I and Merlin and Thelma were married in the courthouse in Pratt.
Rev. H.T. Purcell officiating. I will never forget my brother, Norman, giving me
$20 before we left for Pratt. We honeymooned in Colorado and had a wonderful time
in Canon City, we visited some old friends from Lake City. Mrs. Grant Shigley and
daughter, Mrs. Bert Hammond. Grant Shigley was the first president of the Lake
State Bank in Lake City. They also had a wonderful store. The family moved to
  Colorado after Grant's death.
We lived a while with Tempel's father, Govan Mills, then moved to the Taylor
Nickols Ranch. My brother stayed with us, helping Tempel with the cattle and other
work. Times were hard and cheap. Tempel sold our steer calves for $8 per head and
shipped a carload of cows to Kansas City, which sold for $5. Our daughter, Tonkajo,
was born May 21, 1925, and our son, Huston, was born April 6, 1927. Tempel's father,
Govan Mills, named Tonkajo for the oldest and youngest of the Mills family, Tonk
Mills and Jo Mills Barton. Tonk Mills gave her a nice Hereford heifer. Huston was
named for my borther and his father.
The chldren went to school with Peggy Axtell Mease and Bill Axtel, Harve and
Goldie Axtell's children. Their mother was related to the Mills. We lived on the
Taylor Nickols Ranch until 1936, when we moved on the A.J. Harger Ranch, 3 miles
west of Lake City. We bought 2,240 acres, giving $17 per acre. Times were hard and
some said we would never pay for it, but it has been for many years.
Tonkajo graduated from Lake City High School. She went to Frinds University in
Wichita for two years, where she met her husband, W.L. McElyea. He was in the Army
and studying at the University. They were married in California. They have two
children, Robin Lynn and Wallace Tim, both married now. Robin and her husband Kendell
Warren, live in Wichita and have four children, Tammmy Kay, Margaret Joe, Kendell Jay,
  and Chris.
Huston, our son, graduated from Lake City High School, enlisted in the Army, and
served in in WWII. He married Lois Kenworthy in Wichita. They have two children,
Vickie Jo and Justy. Husty was born in Wichita; Vickie Joe in Medicine Lodge. Both
graduated from Medicine Lodge High School.
Tim McElyea graduated from Medicine Lodge HIgh School. He moved with his wife,
Karren, and daughter, Megan, to Phoenix, Arizona, where his folds were living.
Tempel sufferd a severe stroke three years ago. He can't walk, just use one hand,
and hardly talk. But we thank God he is at home. I care for him, and I love him as
  I always have.
