Robert L. Mitchel
Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Mitchel moved to Barber County in 1926 to
establish a home and business. They, also, assisted in organizing
a church which remains in the same location (now - Assembly of God
Church).
Earlier, 1915, Robert L. Mitchel (Bob), son of Josiah and Emeline
(Elliott), and Maudie M. Gallagher, daughter of William and Emma
(Martin) Galligher, were married in Phillips County where they farmed,
several years. While living in the stone house where Bob was born,
Marie arrived, 1917. Lucile was born in Norton County, 1921.
The girls enjoyed visiting their grandparents. Grandma Gallagher
lived in a sod house where Maudie was raised. There, ice was sawed
from frozen streatms, insulated with straw, stored in ice cellars, and
available to freeze ice cream. Grandpa Mitchel, a Civil War veteran
from Virginia, told stories of moving to Mitchell County, 1873. Mitchels
relocated in Johnstown, Colorado, 1924, where Bob worked in a milk
factory.
During the summer 1926, Bob heard of opportunities in Barber County.
While the family packed, Bob cranked up the Model T - destination -
Sharon. The stork traveled with them delivering Robert October 1926.
Trucks were needed! Bob started his trucking business in 1928 with
a new Chevrolet; in later years, Robert assisted. Bob and Maudie
purchased their Sharon home, 1929.
Bob had various jobs and businesses: trucking business, small dairy,
M&S Service Station, owned Larabee Elevator, Co-op employee, school
bus driver, owned Post Office building and worked as assistant mail
carrier, assistant postmaster, served as City Councilman and taught
Sunday School.
Maudie and children helped with the dairy, raised chickens, planted
gardens, and canned food. The children enjoyed winter evenings singing
while Bob picked the banjo and Maudie corded on the piano. Maudie's
hobbies were whistling, growing flowers, making quilts, feeding birds,
and working with missionary circle.
Summertime meant harvest time, extra work, extra money, homemade ice
cream, and storms. The year a tornado touched near Medicine Lodge, there
was standing only, in Mitchel's storm cellar. In Sharon, it hailed
several inches so ice cream was made using hail to freeze it and shared
with all.
Wheat harvest was usually over by July 4th which was supposed to be
a happy day, however one was sad. Bob bought a new truck and had a
tractor to move before celebrating with the family. The tractor brakes
failed and damaged the truck cab. Thankful for insurance, the family
shot their fireworks.
Bob and Maudie, who were married sixty years, contributed to Barber
County's progress during fifty residing years. They had a part in
replenishing the earth; three married children, Marie - Everett Dunkin;
Lucile - Cap Furry; Robert - Leora (Laudick) Mitchel; seven married
grandchildren plus nine great-grandchildren, Richard - Deloris Dunkin
(David, Amanda); Wayne - Patricia Furry (Timothy); Michael - Connie
Mitchel (Mikela, Jay); Rex - Deboray Furry (Ross); Randy - Jennifer
Mitchel (Christopher, Tara); Patti (Mitchel) - Mark Haynes (Thomas
Mitchel).
