Fred C. Montgomery

Fred Carlton Montgomery, born in Harper County, and I were married in
1917 and farmed near Hazelton until 1961 when we moved to Kiowa. My
husband died in 1965. We had a daughter, Beatrice Marie, now Mrs. Glenn A.
Weir. I have been privileged to have been a mother, a grandmother and a
    great-grandmother.
Fred served his country in World War I. He chose to be a farmer and
thoroughly enjoyed tilling the soil and taking care of his livestock. We
endured the Depression and the Dust Bowl Days. Fred loved baseball. He
played and was the manager of the Hazelton Baseball Team for several years.
He was an active member of the Hazelton Masonic Lodge.
I have enjoyed being an active member of the Hazelton and the Kiowa
Methodist Churches, the Hazelton JMC Club, the Hazelton Mothers Club, the
Hazelton and the Kiowa Home Demonstration Units, the Hazelton Chapter of
the Order of Eastern Star, and the Kiowa Senior Citizens Center.
I wonder why we say 'Good old days' when I think back to when it was
necessary for us to carry out the ashes, clean the coal oil lamps, carry
water to the house, butcher to have our own beef and pork, make most of
our clothes, farm with horses and mules, and endure the heat and the cold
without electricity or gas. The nicest memories I have of the 'Good old
days' are making our own entertainment and having time to visit family and
    friends.
It's been quite an experience seeing the changes that have occurred in
    Barber County in 83 years.
