Robert B. Montgomery
Bob and Ruth Montgomery, missionaries in Pakistan, have made Medicine
Lodge their hometown since 1956, when they and their family of four
children were evacuated from Jordan. They resided in Medicine Lodge for
1 1/2 years before going to Pakistan in 1958. They have lived in Medicine
Lodge during their furloughs since then.
Bob Montgomgery, son of Bruce and Lila Montgomery, was born in northern
California. Being interested in agriculture and veterinary work, he went
to college at Davis for 2 years before joining the Air Force in WWII. He
accepted the Lord during that time and afterwards felt the desire to go as
a missionary to India. He then went to Bible College in Ft. Worth, Texas.
While there he met his wife, then Ruth Phillops, from Medicine Lodge, Kansas.
Ruth was born and raised in Medicine Lodge. Her parents, Roy and Della
(Jester) Phillips were farmers. Ruth graduated from high school in Medicine
Lodge as valedictorian of her class. After passing the Kansas State Teachers
Examination she began teaching at age 18. She spent several summers attending
Ft. Hays College in Hays, Kansas. After teaching 9 years in several Barber
County rural schools, Ruth went to Bible College in Ft. Worth, Texas.
Bob and Ruth were married in the Baptist Church in Sun City, Kansas in
1947. They then pastored a church in Terrell, Texas, for a few years. Their
elder son, Bruce, was born during that time. Their other 3 children; Beth,
Joy and Roy were born in Jerusalem, Jordan during their 5 1/2 years as
missionaries there.
When first reaching Pakistan in 1958, Bob and Ruth spent 2 years in Murree
studying the Urdu language. Then leaving their children in the Missionary
Boarding School, they moved 1,000 miles south to the seaport city of Karachi.
Their main focus has been gospel distribution among the Muslim people. A
few of their many other activities have included: work in several national
Baptist Churches, Bible studies, family retreats, combination sewing and
Bible classes, teaching reading and writing to the illiterate, and teaching
Braille in either Urdu or English to the blind. Now after spending more than
20 years in Pakistan, Bob and Ruth plan to continue this work as long as
possible, serving the Lord among the Pakistani people.
The children all had approximately 2 years each in the Medicine Lodge
schools, and all continued their education after graduation. Bruce married
Connie Workman from Medicine Lodge. They presently have 2 children, Robbie
and Beth, and are living in Macksville, Kansas. Beth married Max Hazard
from Hunting Beach, California. They presently have one daughter, Terri,
and live in Cherokee, Oklahoma. Joy married Bill Breithaupt from Seabeck,
Washington. They have 2 sons, Joshua and Jerrod, and live in Fillmore,
Indiana. Roy married Cherly Berreth from Peace River, Alberta, Canada. They
had a son, Paul, who died at 7 months of age. They are presently living in
Peache River, Alberta.
