John Moore
John Hiram Moore was born the 20th day of June in the year 1894. He was
the only son of James T. and Elizabeth Moore. He had four sisters, Bessie
Johnson, Cora Nida, Rena Phillips and Ellen Earl. Their family lived and
farmed in the Mingona neighborhood. John attended school at Mingona and
helped his dad with the farm chores. When the rest of the family moved
into Medicine Lodge, John stayed on the farm. The family sold the farm in
a few years so John started out on his own. He worked for different ranchers
and farmers until he had saved enough money to rent of place of his own.
He rented a farm just east of Medicine Lodge. He worked hard and saved his
money and acquired a considerable amount of farm machinery and horses.
In the year 1917 near the close of World War I, he decided to sell out
and volunteer for the Army. A few days before he was to go, the peace
terms were declared and there he was without a farm and with no machinery.
This did not stop him, however, he started working and saving again.
In the meantime he had met Lora Gail Urton, a young rural school teacher.
She was the daughter of George and Margaret Urton. She had two sisters,
Elizabeth Stone and Artie Phye. Lora had completed high school and had
attended summer sessions at Emporia State Teachers College and was teaching
at Deerhead School when John met her.
After a long courtship they were married and settled down to farming
about six miles south of Medicine Lodge. Lora, being a town girl, found it
hard to change to farm life but soon she became adapted to it and became
an excellent farm wife.
John lost an eye in a farm accient about 1929 or 1930. This was quite a
handicap for a farmer but he seemed to manage. John and Lora bought a farm
about 7 miles west of town. This is where they raised their family. They
had two children, Vera (Mrs. Jack) Warwick and Harold who passed away in
Germany in the service of his country.
Lora passed away in 1948 and John died in 1954. Friends and relatives
remember this couple as truly honest, fun loving and good American citizens.
