Edgar Moss
The Edgar Moss family have lived all their married life i Barber County.
Edgar was born i 1931, the oldest so of Guy Moss and Lillian (Bodenhammer)
Moss. He, along with his sister, Joye, and brother, Charles, was raised on
the J.C. Brook Ranch east of Lake City. His father, Guy operated the ranch
from 1943 until his death in 1976.
Edgar attended his first six years of elementary school at Forrest City
Rural School, then attended junior high and high school at Lake City,
graduating in 1949. Shortly after graduation the Korean Conflict was in
progress and Edgar served his country in the U.S. Army. He spent 14 months
in Korea, serving in the Quartermasters Corps.
While taking basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas, he became acquainted
with Violet Trembly of Laird, Colorado through a friend. Although not ever
meeting personally, they corresponded for two years and met on his return
from Korea in August 1953. The two years of writing were not in vain, as
they married October 17, 1953.
Since their marriage they have lived continually in Barber County. The
first few years were spent on the ranch, but he was later forced to seek
employment in town during the drought of the 1950's. Edgar was employed
by National Gypsum Company for 14 1/2 years. He kept some cattle through
these years and went back to full-time farming in 1969. They, now and for
the past eleven years, have lived in the Forrest City area on a farm owned
by Wayne Thom. Upon the death of Guy Moss, Edgar assumed the operation of
the Brook Ranch. They farm wheat land of Wayne Thom in the Coats, Kansas
area and operate the late Frank DeGeer's ranch in Eagle Township.
The first sadness to come upon this family was the loss of their first
born son of three weeks. Calvin Perry, in September 1954. In 1956 they
were blessed with a baby daughter, Sandra Violet, and again in 1959 with
another daughter, Sharon Viros. These girls grew up in the area and attended
school in Medicine Lodge.
In October, after her graduation from high school, Sandra married John
Charles Smith, son of a prominent Barber County farmer and rancher, Charles
W. Smith, now deceased. At this time they are the parents of a son Paul
Lynn, and a daughter, Rachel Ann.
Sharon completed high school and then spent a year helping her father on
the farm as a tractor driver and almost everything that was required. She
now resides in Pratt, employed by the Sonic Drive Inn.
The Edgar Moss family are all members of the First Baptist Church in
Medicine Lodge, where they attended faithfully.
This past October 1978, the children and grandchildren of the Mosses held
an open house celebration honoring Edgar and Violet on their 25th wedding
anniversary. Many friends and acquaintances attended, making it a day to be
remembered.
The Moss family feel it is a pleasure to call Barber County home.
