Guy Moss

The Guy Moss family began on a hot summer day, June 13, 1907, when Guy
was born on the wide open Kansas prairie near Croft, Kansas. He was the
fourth child of Abner Perry Moss and Jennie (Branson) Moss.
He spent his early years with his parents, but at the age of 15 he went
to work for the A.D. Shaw Ranch in western BArber County. He spent a few
years on the Shaw Ranch, and then along with brothers Kirt and Henry, now
deceased, went to western Kansas where they broke sod for some of the area
wheat farmers. The 'dust bowl' years were just starting, so Guy came back
to ranch work in Barber and Comanche Counties.
Along about this time Lillian G. Bodenhammer enters into his life. At
this point we will acquaint you with the early life of Lillian. The second
oldest of the children of George Edgar Bodenhammer and Etta May (Urton)
Bodenhammer, Lillian was born on June 11, 1909, near Lamont, Missouri. At
an early age, she along with her family, moved to Lake City, Kansas from
Houstonia, Missouri on February 14, 1912. Her parents spent their remaining
years in Lake City-Sun City area.
Lillian spent her grade school years attending school in Lake City and Sun
City. After attending three years of high school in Lake City, Lillian
attended Sharon High School her senior year and graduated from there. Upon
completion of high school, she attended Wichita University in Wichita,
Kansas and get her teachers certificate.
Lillian taught one year in the country school that was located on the
Govan Mills Ranch. Next, she taught two years in northern Barber County.
During these years she boarded with families in the school district. Her
first year she boarded with John Cook family, in the house she has now
called home since 1943. Her next two years were spent with the Charlie
Divens family west of Coats, Kansas. Then in her fourth year she undertook
to teach in a little school in Wilmore, in Comanche County. There she
boarded with Mr. and Mrs. Emmitt LaFever, Mrs. LaFever being the older
sister of Guy Moss. At this time he was also boarding there, working for
the John Arrinton ranch, it seems that cupid was at work and on December
6, 1930, Guy and Lillian were married at Coldwater, Kansas. Thus, the
family of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Moss.
During this time George Bodenhammer had the contract to grade the county
roads in the Sun City area. Guy was an expert hand at breaking horses and
mules to harness, so he came to Sun City and broke several teams of mules
for George, as he was also in the mule business. This took place on the
Bibbs farm east of Sun City.
Guy and Lillian then farmed for themselves a few years, but the drought
of the 30's forced them out and in 1935 Guy was employed by John Cook, on
the Brook Ranch. Guy took over as operator in 1943, when John Cook sold
     out and moved to Missouri.
Guy operated this ranch until his death in 1976. He was a victum of lung
cancer. Their family consisted of three children: Edgar, now married to
Violet (Trembly) Moss; Joye (Moss) Troyner; and Charles Guy Moss, now
married to Veldeen (Vincent) Moss. All three children reside in Medicine
Lodge, Kansas area. Guy and Lillian enjoyed their friends and loved ones.
Guy was always willing to help any of his neighbors who needed help. Lillian,
or mom, as I know her, still lives on the ranch that she has called home
     for so many years.
