Albert Mott
Albert and Della (Pore) Mott arrived in Barber County in 1935. It had
been a long and adventurous trip for them both. This was to be Bert's
last home, he died in 1968.
He loved his land, travel and especially his grandchildren. Hard work,
truth and honesty were his way of life.
Life began for Bert in Pratt County in 1886. HIs grandparents came from
Switzerland.
Della Pore was the daughter of Mary (Pender) and Leander Pore. She was
born in Indian Territory near Barlesville, Oklahoma.
Leander's poor health cause the family to leave there when Della was 4.
Traveling in a covered wagon, they stopped in Iuka on their way to Oregon.
An enterprising real estate man gave Leander a drink of the good water,
then sold them a farm.
The Mott and Leander farms were lonly a few miles apart. Bert was older
than Della, however, he saw Della when she was a young girl and decided
she was the one he would marry.
At age 22 Bert went to western Kansas to homestead. Four years later he
came back to claim his bride, planning to be married in the fall. The bad
winter of 1912 delayed their marriage and return to the homestead until
February.
The years passed, full of much toil and labor, eight children and finally
full of dust.
Crops failed and sheep died and in 1935 Bert began looking for a new
home for the family.
After searching several states, he found and loved the farm on Elm Creek
north of Medicine Lodge. This really seemed like God's country to the family
from the dry and dusty west.
The work was still hard. There were the crops, the garden, a big orchard
and of course, the sheep to herd. But they loved the trees, the water of
Elm Creek and the community of young people.
Jack is the only one remaining in Kansas. The other seven live from coast
to coast, but all enjoy coming 'home' t visit. They bring children and
grandchildren to fish in the ponds, wade in Elm Creek and see where they
grew up.
In 1949 Bert and Della built a new home. Their granddaughter Lori now
lives there.
Della has been a resident of the Attica Hospital Annex for the past six
years. Until she moved to Attica, Della enjoyed attending the First Christian
Church, the Willing Workers Class and EHU.
Now Della enjoys visits from her children and grandchildren and her visits
to the home of Jack and Ann and seeing the farm where she raised her children.
The children now reside in these places: the eldest, Naomi Watts, Seattle,
Washington was married before the family moved to Barber County; Edward, in
Gilbert, Arizona is married to June Lamkins; Genevieve (Mrs. John) Crowell
lives in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas; Jack in Medicine Lodge; Daisy (Mrs. Bill)
Douthett lives in Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Winnie Bobb in Long Island, New
York; Joan (Mrs. Harry) Hanson in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas; and Della (Mrs.
Heiny) Boyd, in Alburquerque, New Mexico. There are 36 grandchildren, 39+
great grandchildren and looking forward to great-great grands.
