Joe D. Murphy
Joseph D. Murphy and Pearl E. Muller were united in marriage June 15,
1912 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.
Joe was born and grew up in Illinois. He came to Medicine Lodge as a
young man. Pearl was born in Wyoming and moved with her parents to
Oklahoma, when she was quite young. The family was urged to come to
Medicine Lodge from Seiling, Oklahoma, by Carrie Nation. As a young child,
Pearl went to Carry Nation and turned the organ grinder when she spoke to
groups and church congregations. Pearl attended school in Medicine Lodge.
Her fondest memoris seemed to be of when she worked in the Kandy Kitchen,
which was located on the corner of Main street where Parkers Food Store
now stands.
Joe worked as a lineman for the telephone company for a few years after
their marriage. Later, they moved to a farm near Coldwater, where their
first child, a daughter, Jessie Lorraine, was born. About two years later
they moved on the M.T. Williams farm near Medicine Lodge. Here, there son,
Marion Dean, was born. Both the children still reside in Medicine Lodge.
Later, Joe went to work for Metz Lunber Company, and around 1924 he was
made manager of the lumber yard at Lake City. This was a lovely, friendly
little community at that time, and the family enjoyed living there, very
much. After a few years, Joe was transferred to the Sun City yard and was
replaced at Lake City, by Vern Bishop.
In November, 1928, Joe passed away at the Pratt Hospital from complications
due to a ruptured appendix. He was a young man of forty-three years.
Pearl and her two children moved back to Medicine Lodge at this time.
Pearl spent many years teaching in the Primary Department at the Baptist
Church. She lvoed the children, and later, her joy was her grandchildren,
Bob and Jolene Warren. She passed away in April, 1975, at the age of 81
years.
