Charles H. Nelson
John Nelson, father of Charles H. Nelson, moved from Illinois to a farm
in the Pixley area east of Medicine Lodge, where the family lived until
the time the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma was opened for settlement. My
father, Charles, maed the run in 1893 and took a claim nine miles southwest
of Kiowa.
Charles married Elizabeth Ann Patton in 1900. They lived on this farm,
where three children were born, Mildred and Milton (twins), and Edith.
In 1915 my parents moved to the Kiowa area. Mildred and I graduated from
the Kiowa High School in 1920.
Father had farming and livestock interest around Kiowa. In 1922 he bought
a farm three miles west of Medicine Lodge, where we lived a number of years.
Mother and Father were faithful members and workers in the Medicine Lodge
Methodist Church.
I was manager of the Standard Oil Service Station in Medicine Lodge at
the time of the first Indian Peace Treaty Pageant in 1927. We enjoyed
having a part in the 1957 pageant by driving one of the covered wagons.
I well remember the tordado that struck the county in 1927.
My sister Mildred married Melvah Lonker. They are both deceased.
Edith (Mrs. George Cornwell) lives in Wichita.
My wife, Mary Alice Cook, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V.S. Cook,
early residents of Medicine Lodge.
Soon after my marriage to Mary Alice in 1929, we moved to McAlister,
Oklahoma, where I was manager of the V.S. Cook Lumber Company for seventeen
years.
We moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1947, where we owned a hardware
and building supply store for a number of years.
My father passed away in 1953. Both our mothers passed away in 1957.
We have one daughter Carol Jean, now Mrs. Dan Kloss, of Lemitar, New
Mexico. They have two daughters, Karen and Tracy.
Mary Alice and I are retired and live in Williamsburg, New Mexico. We
remember our happy early days in Medicine Lodge and Barber County.
