Paul E. Nelson
The Paul E. Nelson family moved to Kiowa in 1961 from Belle Plaine,
Kansas, when Paul accepted the principalship of Kiowa High School. In
1962 Paul was appointed Superintendent of Schools of the Kiowa School
District, and later was employed as Superintendent of Schools in the
newly unified school district, South Barber USD No. 255. Paul has
received many honors and much recognition during his tenure as Super-
intendent of Schools at South Barber, the most notable was in 1969-70,
when he was elected president of the Kansas Association of School
Administrators, an educational orginization consisting of the school
administrators of the State of Kansas.
Paul was raised in Lindsborg, Kansas, and earned his Bachelors degree
at Bethany College at Lindsborg. He later earned his Masters degree in
Educational Administration at the University of Kansas at Lawrence, and
the Specialist in Educational Administration degree at Emporia State
University at Emporia, Kansas.
Maxine, his wife, was raised in WaKeeney, Kansas, and attended the
University of Missouri at Columbia. She and Paul were married in WaKeeney
in 1947. Maxine has always had an interest in children who have special
problems and has devoted her spare time working with exceptional children.
At the present time she is employed by the South Central Kansas Special
Education Cooperative.
The three Nelson children attended the Kiowa Schools and graduated from
Kiowa High School. William Lee, the oldest, earned his Bachelors and
Masters degrees at Ft. Hays State University in Business Administration
and is employed by General Motors in Wichita. Mark Douglas graduated from
Hutchinson Junior College, attended Northern Arizona State at Flagstaff,
and graduated from the Police Academy at Phoenix, Arizona. He is employed
in law enforcement in Maricopa County, Arizona. His wife, Luanna, is a
kindergarten teacher in the Mesa area, where they reside. Jeanette Louise,
the youngest, attended Ft. Hays State and Kansas State University. She
and her husband, Jim Pinimonti, live in Stowe, Pennsylvania, and are
employed by the B.F. Goodrich Company.
The Nelsons have all enjoyed the fine, friendly people of Barber County
and have formed many friendships they will always treasure.
