Chas. D. and W.A. Newkirk
Chas. D. Newkirk was a farmer-stockman in Moore Township, Barber County,
Kansas. HIs attractive estate northwest of Kiowa was erected in 1887. He
was born in MOniteau County, Missouri, August 23, 1845, son of David S.
and Mary McPherson Newkirk. Charles was reared on the homestea where he
was born and received such educational advantages as were afforded in that
day. At age 21 he took charge of a farm in Morgan County.
On December 20, 1867, he married Theodosia H. Howard, daughter of Edward
and Martha Redmond Howard. Docia, one of six children, was born in 1849 in
Missouri.
In 1882 Charles and Docia came to Barber County, Kansas. He purchased
160 acres a few miles northwest of Medicine Lodge where he lived five years.
He added land until a total of 920 acres was obtained. He disposed of this
when he purchased a half section in Moore township. Soon after the beginning
of the century, he and his two sons controlled 4, 040 acres in Moore and
Nippawalla townships. In 1901, 600 acres were in wheat, 100 in rye and 500
in Kafir corn. He also handled an average of 400 head of high grade cattle.
Mr. Newkirk was a Democrat but gave allegiance to People's part and was a
public spirited citizen. He was highly esteemd by his friends and they were
members of the Christian Church.
Charles and Docia had three sons; George died in infancy, William Aubrey,
and Edwin.
Charles died in 1916. Docia continued to live on the ranch with her son,
Aubrey, and wife Mary and near Ed and his wife Mattie and their children.
She passed away in 1940.
W.A. (Aubrey) Newkirk was born in 1873. He was a farmer and rancher, well
known as a breeder of purebred short-horns.
W.A. was a Democrat and was a member of the Kansas legislature 14 years,
retiring in 1937. While serving his country at Topeka he met and married
Mary Cassin (b.1884). She was a lovely addition to the community. W.A.'s
mother lived with them on the ranch until her death.
W.A. and Mary moved to Kiowa in 1941 but kept active in management of the
ranch. In the late 1940's oil production was opened on neighboring Page
land and soon the Newkirk leases were opened.
Mr. Newkirk died in 1957. He was a member of Kiowa Methodist Church,
Masonic Lodge and Wichita Consistory. He was a member of Farm Bureau,
Cattlemens Association and an early President of Greensburg Credit Assn.
Mary continued to maintain her home in Kiowa until her death in 1967.
The one time beautiful ranch home is no longer standing, a part of the
era of the passing of farm homes. Both of the Newkirk couples are interred
in Kiowa Cemetery.
