Jack Newsom
The trail was long and devious from Bedford, Virginia, to Barber County
in Kansas. John (Jack) Robert Newsom and Virginia (Nellie) Wingfield made
the trip to Kansas after their marriage in Virginia, where they were born
and grew to adults.
Jack's family consisted of one brother and three sisters. His father was
a farmer. Nellie's family consisted of two brothers and two sisters. Her
father was also a farmer. Jack was a farmer in Virginia. He also worked in
the coal mines in the winter. I have his hand made coal pick.
Uncle Jack and Aunt Nellie, as they were lovingly called, lived on the
Newsom farm 3 1/2 miles east and 1 mile south of Sharon, Kansas, located
directly east of Enon Rural School. They came to Kansas in 1885 with five
children; and two girls were born in Kansas. Their family consisted of
two boys and five girls. Pearl married Frank McMurtrey. They had one son,
Everet, who lives in Oklahoma Ciyt, Oklahoma. Marie married Bob Frazier.
They had one daughter, Marjorie. Herbert married Lora Trice. They had two
sons, Trice and Robert. Trice lives in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Hattie
married Jim Goss. They had two children, Isabell and Dean. Isabell lives
in Wichita, Kansas. Arthur married Ethel White. They had three children,
Randall, Maurine and Theda. Randall lives in Wichita, Kansas, and Theda
lives in Independence, Kansas. Bertha married Bob Watts. They had one son,
Jack. Gertrude (Trudy) married Milton Primm. They had two daughters, Betty
and Joan. Betty lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Joan lives in Houston,
Texas.
Many pupils who attended the Enon Country School look back with love to
the Newsoms who always gave cookies or apples to the school children at
recess time when they would bring the eggs they had gathered in the school
barn. Many of these pupils, now grandparents themselves, are liberally
sprinkled throughout Barber County and Kansas.
The Newsoms lived in Attica the last few years of their lives, and after
their death, their son, Arthur, moved to the family farm.
