Trice Newsom

Trice Newsom and Catherine Stone conducted their courtship in 1930 near
the old fashioned thread case situated between the Trice Grocery Store and
the Trice Department Store. Both attended college at Kansas State University.
Both worked for Trice Mercantile Company; Trice in the grocery part, starting
      in 1922, Catherine in the office in 1930. Both were born in the Sharon Valley;
Trice in Sharon and Catherine in the country east of Sharon. Trice and his
parents, Herbert and Lora Trice Newsom, moved to Medicine Lodge when he was
three years old. Catherine lived on the farm until she was ten, then into
Sharon with her parents, Howard and Ethel Gibson Stone, and sister, Marguerite.
The Stones had planned to retire in Medicine Lodge, so after the sudden death
of her father, Catherine and her mother built and moved into the house at
      206 East Washington.
The DIRTY 30's and the DEPRESSION hit and after four years of dating, Trice's
pay was upped to $75.00. Plans for a wedding moved ahead, a simple service
in the First Baptist Church as befitted Depression days, a train trip to
Detroit, Michigan, watching our Ford V-8 come off the assembly line, on into
Canada, to Niagara Falls, and back to St. Louis, watching the St. Louis
Cardinals and the Cleveland Browns. All went well until the bride nearly
fell from the car when the door accidently opened.
Entertainment for dating couples during the Depression consisted of 25 cent
movies, golf, hunting, hiking, and fishing.
        "BUT AIN'T LOVE WONDERFUL."
In 1936 Trice and Catherine bought the men's store, calling it "Newsom's
Store." Trice has been interested in various community projects: church,
Masonic Lodge, Jaycees and the Chamber, tennis and golf. Cahterine's intersts
have been church, director of church choirs, Sunday School classes, Monday
Afternoon Club, BPW Club, PEO, OES, Chamber of Commerce.
Then there were FIVE!!! A girl, Sue Ann; a girl, Kay Lyn; and a boy Bob.
The children attended the same grade school and graduated from the same high
school as their father. All three were sports minded and musicians. Sue married
Jerry Vance, children - Todd and Kayla - live in Monroe, Louisiana; Kay
      married Bob Wood, children - Angela and Jamie - live in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma;
and Bob and son, Shane, live in Madison, Wisconsin.
After Trice suffered a heart attack in 1962, the men's store was sold He
later became associated with the school, driving a bus, and later was named
Transportation Supervisor. After the last chick flew the coop, Catherine was
employed at the Pratt radio station for eight years, then became the Manager
of the Chamber of Commerce for five years.
In August, 1978, both Newsoms took a new 'togetherness.' They became the
new directors of the local Housing Authority, consisting of Indian Hills
Lodge, Units A and B, and Indian Hills Plaza.
