Bernard Nossaman
Bernard (Barney), son of Mr. and Mrs. William Nossaman, was the third child
of a family of eight children born near Cunningham in Kingman Coutny, one-half
mile south of the Old Sun City road; he was raised on the farm and attended
Hardscrabble country school, nine miles northeast of Isabel.
In 1931 he married Ethel Ellis, a daughter of Ernest and Elnora Ellis, who
came to Barber County from Bloomfield, Iowa, as a young married in the early
1900's. Ethel was the fifth child of a family of eight children, two boys and
six girls. The Ellis children were Dale, who lives in Pratt; Roy of Derby;
Dorothy Broady, Okeene, Oklahoma; Ardis White, Augusta; Mildred Laverentz
(deceased); Ethel; Gertrude Hill, Wichita; and Helen Gerken, Enid, Oklahoma.
Mr. Ellis was a carpenter by trade and built many of the houses in Isabel,
and also the building that houses the grocery store and the cafe. The Ellis
children all attended school in Isabel.
After Ethel and Barney were married, they lived a short time in Cunningham,
but have lived most of their married life in the Isabel area. Barney farmed
for many years, did carpenter work, and drove a school bus; he worked for the
Isabel Farmer's Co-op for ten years before retiring in 1977. They raised three
sons, all of whom attended school in Isabel; Harold, who lives in Kansas City
and workes for SBA; Gene, Kansas City, who works as a book binder; and Jerry,
a dentist in Lawrence. They have seven grandchildren, who all enjoy visiting
and vacationing in the summer time, as they have a cabin at 99 Springs where
the children swim and play all day long.
