Walter Scott Nurse

Frederick Button Nurse (1856-1936) was born in Norwich, England and came to Barber
County as a child with his mother, Melley Nurse (1827-1899) and his brothers, Edward
and Walter. Frederick married Hannah Viola Rogers (1865-1945). They lived in Mingona
Township, where Frederick farmed and did carpentry work. Their children included Ralph
(1884-1950), Lee (1886-1954), Jessie (1889-1954), Walter Scott (1891-1951), and Carrie
  Nurse Matthews (1895-1970).
Walter was born in Medicine Lodge and attended school at Mingona. On May 27, 1916,
Walter married Ethel Leona Hunt (b. Sept 11, 1897), daughter of John Washington Hunt
(1886-1921) and Clara Bell Wingfield Hunt (1876-1958). John and Clara came to Barber
County from Vinita, Oklahoma, in 1915. The women came by train, while the men came
  by wagon.
Walter and Ethel settled in the Mingona area of Barber County, where they raised
their family of two sons and two daughters.
Although handicapped by spinal meningitis in early childhood, Walter loved horses
and horseback riding and was one of the founders of the saddle club, now known as the
Medicine Lodge Saddle and Roping Club. The first events of this organization were held
in a field near the Nurse farm home. When his health failed and he could no longer
participate, Walter was honored with a lifetime membership in the club. Walter died
  on November 20, 1951.
Children of Ethel and Walter include Marvin M., Jack D., Betty Jane, and Carol Sue.

children, and she participates in activities such as Golden Agers, Community Club,
World War II Mothers' Club, and Forest City Ladies Aid.
