Brenda Harbaugh Nygaard

Brenda L. Harbaugh, first child of Jim and Beulah Harbaugh, was born September
14, 1950, at Hardtner, Kansas. I (Brenda) attended Julian country school for seven
years. After that my sisters, one brother, and I attended Hardtner School.
Through high school I served on the Student Council as Secretary-Treasurer, went
to speech contests, was Football Queen my Junior year, and entered the Barber County
Beef Cook-off contest. I placed first my Junior year and then went to State at
Manhattan. I placed 2nd my Senior year in the Beef Cook-Off and went to State again.
After high school graduation in 1968, I enrolled at Patricia Stevens Career College
in Wichita and studied business correspondence.
In 1969 I entered the Miss Barber County Pageant. In 1970 I was Farm Bureau Queen
  for Barber County.
In 1971 I journeyed to Fort Hays State College at Hays, Kansas, to continue my
education. That same year I was sponsored by Custer Hall in the Miss Fort Hays State
  Pageant.
In 1972 I was employed by the Central Kansas Power Company, where I worked as
Assistant Cashier for three years. One of my customers, Loyd D. Nygaard, who was
concerned about his bill, was the man I married.
Loyd was born February 14, 1952 at St. Francis, Kansas. His parents were Olav
(deceased) and Goldie (Halligan) Nygaard. He has two brothers, Lonell and Nathan.
Loyd went to grade and high school at McDonald, Kansas. He was a Boys State
Representative in 1969 and was class president his Freshman, Sophomore and Senior
  years of high school.
He attended Fort Hays State and was in the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He was
employed by the Ramada Inn in 1971 as bell-hop, laundry person, desk clerk, night
  auditor, and assistant manager.
After we were married March 8, 1975, at the Methodist Church in Hays, we moved
to Wichita, Kansas, where Loyd was employed by the Best Western Canterbury Inn as
assistant manager. I worked at St. Joseph's Medical Center. After six months, Loyd
was transferred back to Hays as the Ramada Inn General Manager. He hired me to be
his secretary. At that time we bought a new home and now live in Hays.
Loyd belongs to the Masonic Lodge, Elks, Tiger Club for Fort Hays State. He is
also President of a Kansas Ramada Inn Organization and is on the board of directors
for the Kansas Hotel and Motel Association.
I belong to Eastern Star, Circle for Methodist Women, and am in the Methodist
Bible Class. Some interesting hobbies I have are painting ceramics and jewelry making.
I have made several rings and bracelets for our family.
On February 25, 1978, we were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Heather Renee
Nygaard. Heather is learning to walk now and has a personality all her own. Since
she is our first child, she entertains herself by playing with her puppy, Benji.
