Andrew Jackson Ott

Andrew Jackson Ott was born near Steinbach, Germany, in 1844. Andrew
married Anna Barber Baier in 1869; that same year the young couple left
Germany and sailed for the United States. They were six weeks crossing
     the ocean. Andrew also had a brother who made the crossing with them;
on arrival in New York City, they were separated and never saw each
     other again.
Andrew and his wife settled near Attica, New York. Andrew was a shoe
cobbler by trade, and walked several miles a day to and from his work.
Their first son, Leonard, was born in 1871, with Mary and Andrew
Herbert following soon afterwards. They also had two children die in
     infanccy while living there.
In 1880 they moved to Wabaunsee County, Kansas. Here, in the year 1883,
     their daughter, Anna, was born.
Moving on father west in 1886, they purchased land in Barber County,
locating about sixteen miles southwest of Medicine Lodge, in Eagle Township.
Their first home was a few miles north of the Lockert School house. A
little later on, Andrew traded for a place with more timber. Their new home
was nearer Anna's brother, Conrad Baier.
In later years, they purchased property and moved into Medicine Lodge.
In 1919, Andrew and Anna celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their
home on West Second Street, with a family dinner in their backyard. Andrew
always had a large vegetable garden and many beautiful flowers.
Andrew passed away at the age of 84 in 1928; Anna died in 1929.
All of their children married and settled in Barber County.
Andrew and Anna attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church whenever possible.
They suffered many hardships as all pioneers did, but enjoyed a beautiful
     and long life together.
