Lee Ott
Lee was born on his family farm December 27, 1908. He was the youngest
child of Leonard and Elaine Ott. One of the many things Lee remembers in
his younger years is that when Fritz Lenkner came from Germany to the
United States, they would spend their free time teaching him the English
language.
Lee attended the Lasswell School through the eighth grade, when he had
to quit to help with the farming, as most farm boys had to do in those
days. In August of 1928, Leee bought the first Model A Roadster in Medicine
Lodge, which was quite a classic car in those days.
In 1930, Lee married Dana Cobble. Their daughter, Dana Lee, was born June
3, 1935. Lee was farming the family farm now, as his father had retired and
moved to town.
It was on March 18, 1939 that Lee and Jennie Van Ausdall were married in
Alva, Oklahoma. Jennie was the daughter of Walter and Eleanor VanAusdall.
She spent her younger years in Attica, Kansas, where she went to school with
her one brother and three sisters.
On September 28, 1940, their son, Robert Lee, was born. In February of
1940 there was about 2 feet of snow on the ground and Jennie was about to
have a miscarriage. But for the help of the neighbors hooking on to Lee's
car with a team and wagon and pulling it through the snow, and about twelve
men starting out from town to scoop out the drifts, Robert may not have
arrived at that latter date.
In the winter time Lee would do a lot of trapping and would cure his own
hides.
Lee and Jennie lived on the farm until 1953. The farm was sold that year
and they moved into town.
After moving to town, Lee and Jennie operated the Standard Station on
Highway 160, in 1954 and 1955.
In 1956, they bought the Rodgers Floral Shop. In 1958 they rebuilt the
greenhouses and the new shop that they operated until they retired in 1971,
selling the shop to their son and his wife.
Lee and Jennie have always loved to travel and spent many summers going
to Colorado to fish and relax. In the yearly years, Lee was active in the
Medicine Lodge Saddle and Roping Club and went to many rodeos and dances.
If there was a Bob Wills Band within a hundred miles, they were there, as
his music was just about tops.
Lee and Jennie have two grandsons, Steve and Dicky; and four granddaughters
Tracy, Gwen, Jennifer, and Sherly.
This history is only a brief account of the many beautiful things that
have occured in the lives of Lee and Jennie Ott.
