C.C. "Bill" Packard
Sherman Porter and Alice L. Rall Packard and their son, Guy Everett, came to
Barber County in 1911. After selling their farm in Crawford County to Peabody
Coal, they purchased a farm in Mingona Township.
Guy Everett, born April 19, 1892, in Crawford County, served in WWI. After
coming home, he agin engaged in farming with his father.
Guy married Ruth Kennedy in 1922. Evert Porter was born Jan. 17, 1923. Evert
married Bernice Harding. They had two sons, Bill Vernon and Michael Gene. Evert
was killed in a plane crash in 1947.
C.C. "Bill" was born Sept. 29, 1924. After attending kindergarten in Pasadena,
California, Bill attended school at Kling, northwest of Sun City, and then
Mingona School. After MLHS, Bill enlisted in the Navy in 1943. He served in the
Asiatic-Pacific Area, bing discharged in May 1946.
Maida Anne Conner, b orn Dec. 1, 1929, second child of Elmer W. and Violet
(Davis) Conner, married Bill, June 13, 1946. To them four children were born, all
at Hardtner, Kansas.
Evert Lynn was born May 7, 1947. He was always his dad's shadow, as soon as
he could walk. He started helping at a very early age in everything about the
farm. Lynn married Jayne Wheelock and they have three sons: Patrick Bryan, Randall
Lynn, and James Robert.
Robert William was born June 21, 1948, arriving in time to delay harvest one
day. He also loved to "help out" as soon as he could follow his Dad and Lynn around.
Bob married Marilyn Tatera, and they have two daughters, Debra Gayle and Anne Marie.
James Stanley was born April 13, 1950, and he and "Pup" could be seen trying to
keep up with the ever lengthening steps of Lynn and Bob. Jim married Pamela Phelps,
and they have a daughter, Brooke Elizabeth.
Sherrill Kay made her appearance May 13, 1952, making both sides of the family
very happy to at last have a "Packard girl." Sherrill married Louis L. Orr III (Trey),
and they have one son, Louis L. Orr IV (Skip).
Bill worked the family farm for many years, and it was really a family project,
as Bill went to work for Kansas Power and Light Co. in 1956 as a pressure operator
in the gas field.
Bill is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Maida Anne is a member
of VFW aux., United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Lorraine Chapter #39
OES, and Forest City Ladies Club.
Maida Anne is the third generation to be active in the Methodist Church in
Medicine Lodge, with Lynn and Jim's children being the fifth.
