Charles Palmer
Charles Palmer and his wife, Minnie Spung of Harper, were married May 8,
1902. My father came from Irwin, Kentucky, and my mother from Paris, Illinois.
They lived in Harper a short time and came to Barber County in 1907. They
settled south of Sharon. My oldest brother, David, was four years old and
sister, Ruth, was five months old when they came to Sharon Valley. Four
children were born later: Howard of Wichita, Estell of Medicine Lodge,
Raymond of Wichita, and Mary of Colorado Springs. Sister Ruth died March
1950.
We attended school at College Center #49, which was consolidated when I
was in second grade. We rode a bus to Sharon to attend school. The bus
was homemade by Woody Dunkin. He was driver of the bus all through my
school years.
My parents raised wheat and corn, and we had a nice orchard from which
we sold may bushels of fruit. We visited our neighbors and spent many
winter evenings together popping corn, making candy, and visiting.
The social life of the community centered around church and the school.
My parents and Mr. and Mrs. Copley and others were founding members of the
Methodist Church, which was later sold to the Assembly of God Church.
My husband, Wayne Nichols of Zenda, Kansas, and I were married in June,
1928, and moved to Medicine Lodge. In 1931 our twins were born, Darrell
Gene and Doria Dean. Our son Darrell died in 1932. In 1933 our son Kenneth
Eugene was born.
Dorla and her husband, Robert Crevisour, live in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
They have three daughters, Pamela, Deborah, and Jill. Pamela and family live
at Rockford, Illinois. Deborah and family live at Marquette, Michigan. Jill
works for an Insurance Co. in Denver, Colorado.
Kenneth and his wife, Shirley Merrifield, live in Medicine Lodge and have
two daughters, Vanessa and Dawn. Vanessa spent one year at college in Emporia
and is now married to Steve Etheridge. They live near Medicine Lodge. Dawn
lives at home and attends Medicine Lodge High School.
We have five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Wayne and I enjoyed many trips to visit our daughter and family. Robert
spent twenty three years in the Air Force. He is Internal Auditor in the
Sault Savings Bank in Michigan.
Kenneth spent four years in the Air Force during the Korean War, two and
a half years were spent in Japan. He is Cost Accountant for Gold Bond
Building Products.
Wayne was employed by Best Brothers Keene Cement Company, which later
sold to National Gypsum Company. He retired in July, 1973, after 45 years
of service.
We have enjoyed living in Medicine Lodge, are members of the United
Methodist Church, and spend many hours fishing in the Barber County Lake.
We had our house built in 1954; it was the second home built in the
Regnier Addition. We celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary, June 1, 1978.
