H.E. (Bill) Parker
Harold E. (Bill) and Ethel Marie Parker moved to Medicine Lodge from
Hutchinson in 1940, buying the Pipkin Grocery Store; however, Bill is a
native of Barber County, having been born and raised in Kiowa. His parents
were early residents of Kiowa. His mother, Roberta Heskitt Parker, came to
Kiowa when she was five years old and the town was only fifteen years old.
She was one of the first graduates of Kiowa High School. Roberta's father,
Al Heskitt, ran the race for the Cherokee Strip land. Bill's father, Emory
E. Parker, homesteaded in Barber County as a very young man. Later Emory
and Roberta started Parker's Grocery in Kiowa; it remained in business until
1977.
Bill graduated from Kiowa High School, where he participated in all
sports and then attended Kansas University.
Ethel Marie (Gilyeat) Parker was raised in Wellington, Kansas. She
graduated from Wellington High School as a National Honor student and then
attended Washburn College, Topeka, and Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas,
where she majored in piano and organ.
Ethel Marie went to Kiowa to teach in the grade school and there met Bill
Parker. A romance soon developed, and Bill and Ethel Marie were married
October 7, 1928. In 1978 they celebrated their fiftieth anniversary with a
reception. Their life in Medicine Lodge has been a happy and profitable one.
Their store, Parker's Foodliner, has grown from a small one to the large
super market it is today.
During this time, Bill has been very active in civic affairs. He was a
member of the City Council, President of the Chamber of Commerce, President
of Lions Club, a Scout Commissioner, Chairman of the board of Trustees of
the United Methodist Church, and a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine
Club.
Ethel Marie has played the organ for the United Methodist Church 39 years,
besides having a class of piano students. She has been a member of Monday
Afternoon Club, Self Culture Club, and Eastern Star.
They have raised four children, Philip, Gary, Carl, and Donna. Philip Roger
graduated in chemical engineering from Kansas University, then received a
Masters Degree from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. He works for
Monsanto Chemical Company and lives in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He and his
wife, Dorothy, have three children: Roger, Sue Anne, and John. Roger and Sue
are in college, and John is in junior high.
Gary Lee is a graduate of Fort Hays State College, majoring in business
administration. He is married to Dorothy Anne, daughter of Jibo and Bess
(Harbaugh) Hewitt. They have four children: Julia Anne, Amy Jo, Brad, and Bill.
Julia graduated from Emporia State College with a 3.9 grade point average.
She is married to Kenneth Jones; they live in Daytona Beach, Florida. Amy Jo
is married to Michael Whelan, and they are attending Kansas State University.
Amy is an outstanding artist. Bard and Bill are in high school. Gary is in
partnership with his father in Parker's Foodliner.
Carl Eugene attended Emporia State College and lives in Joplin, Missouri.
He and his wife, Charlyn, have four children: Greg, Brenda, Michael, and
Jennifer. Gred and Brenda are in high school, but Mike and Jennifer are not
yet school age.
Donna Marie attended Cottey College, Missouri, and Bethany College, Linds-
borg, majoring in art. She is married to Kenneth Hill; they have a sign company,
manufacturing industrial markings. They reside in Hutchinson and have one litte
girl, Jacqueline Marie, who starts school this year, 1979.
