Homer J. Pearce

Homer Pearce was born at Ozark, Missouri. He moved with his family
to Coats, Kansas, and had all his grade and high school education there.
He moved to Sun City in 1924 and worked at the gypsum quarry about nine
months. His parents were Jesse Henry and Daisy Price Pearce. They, with
his two brothers, Junior and Harry, and sister, Helen, had moved to Sun
City in 1922. Homer moved back to Coats and worked on farms until November
1928, when he started working in the Post Office for Postmaster Mollie
Harris. He succeeded Mrs. Harris as Postmaster, October, 1942. His hobby
      has been woodworking.
He married Hattie Mae Staker in 1935, and they established their home
in Sun City. Hattie Mae was born near Tangier, Oklahoma. She lost her
parents at an early age and was adopted by John William and Etta Maddox
Staker. They lived on a farm near Ashley, Oklahoma. In 1926 they moved
to a farm near Sharon, Kansas. They wre members of the Nine Cottonwood
Brethern Church in their community. Hattie Mae attended Joint School
District 87-94 for her eighth grade. Then she attended Sharon High School,
graduating in 1931. Her favorite girlhood pastimes were horseback riding
and sewing. She moved with her parents to Coats, Kansas in February, 1935.
Later that summer she started teaching piano at Sun City, and continued
several years after marrying and moving to Sun City. She helped her husband
at the Post Office, becoming clerk and Assistant Postmaster, filling in when
Mr. Pearce was on vacation. Homer retired as Postmaster in June 1972, as she
retired also. They were honored with a lovely retirement supper and gift
by the community in September 1972.
The Pearces still reside in Sun City and attend the Baptist Church, where
she is pianist. They raise a small vegetable garden and flowers in the
summertime, canning fruits and vegetables as available. Both enjoy good
      health.
Homer has been a cooperative weather observer for the United States
      Weather Service since July, 1940.
