Alfred Pelzl
Mr. and Mrs. August Walters and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Pelzl came to Barber
County from Catherine, Kansas, in 1911, transported by teams and wagons.
They purchased a quarter section of land from Dobbs ranch southeast of
Medicine Lodge. The first building they erected was a chicken house, which
they lived in while the house was being built. When the house was finished,
Mrs. Walters and Mrs. Pelzl and two children, Alphons and Edgar, came to
Pixley by train with machinery, household goods, cattle, and horses.
They put in crops while building improvements. There were four more
children born to Alfred and Catherine: William, Francis, Kathryn, and
Elfreda.
In 1919 Alfred Pelzl bought 200 more acres from MacGregor, which lay
across the road from the home place.
Alfred Pelzl passed away in 1921 of pneumonia. Catherine worked hard to
keep from losing the land after his death. Alphons and Edgar helped farm,
under the supervision of Grandpa Walter. During the winter months, all the
children except Alphons lived at Sharon wiht Grandmother Walter and
attended school.
Catherine, August Walter, and Alphons stayed on the farm and tended to
the work and cared for the livestock. Alphons attended school at North
Star. During the summer months, they were all on the farm and helped with
any job they were big enough to handle.
Grandfather August Walter died in 1928; Amalia Walter, his wife, in 1941.
Francis Pelzl passed away in 1942, and Catherine Pelzl died in 1973.
William Pelzl is now farming the estate. He has four children - Shelly,
Frankie (Frances), Virginia, and LeRoy.
Alphons is now living in Sharon and has two children - Pat and Beverly.
Edgar lives in August, Kansas, and has one step-child, John. Kathryn
Pelzl Wilson lives in Wichita and has three children; they are Randy, Ronald,
and Delbert. Elfreda Pelzl Hall lives in Wichita and has two children:
Vickie and Brad.
