William Gerald Peterie

   
       William Gerald Peterie, born April 11, 1919, on the Layton White place,
     is the only son of Blanche Bailey and Jesse T. Peterie. When he was only
     one year old, they moved to the farm south of Isabel, where he spent the 
     first decade of his life. He attended the Isabel Schools, graduating from 
     high school with the class of '38. That fall he went to Wichita to further
     his schooling. He completed a course at the Great Plains School of Aeronautics
     and was employed by Beech Aircraft until the spring of 1944, when he enlisted
     in the Air Force.
       On November 8, 1941, Gerald and Mary Louise Brant, daughter of Charles C.
     and Zoe Dentler Brant, were married at her parents' home in Pratt County.
     They became the second "William and Mary," following his grandfathers
     tradition. She was a Registered Nurse and continued her practice until
     Gerald returned from WWII. He served on the Pacific Theatre. Upon his
     return they moved back to Barber County, where Gerald engaged in farming
     with his father.
       In 1950 the family moved to Rose Hill, Kansas, where they resided for 20
     years on an 80 acre farm, and Gerald returned to Beech Aircraft.
       Their family of four children are William Gregg, born October, 1944, the 
     third "William G." and also third generation to served his country; he
     enlisted in 1965; served as a Green Beret and paratrooper until 1967;
     married Anita Sprout in 1969; graduated from Oklahoma State University; has
     one daughter, LIsa Marie; and lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Cynthia Louise, born
     March, 1947, married Thad Goodrich in 1973; has two daughters, Amy and Emilie;
     and lives in Newton, Kansas. Jerome Thomas, born October, 1949, graduated
     Pittsburg State; married Nancy Engel in 1972; has one daughter, Michelle, and
     a son, Jasons; and lives at ElDorado, Kansas. Jon Charles, born December,
     1951, married Janet LaClair in 1975 and lives in Denver, Colorado.
       In November, 1977, Gerald was honored as a 25-year employee at Beech,
     having worked in the Engineering Department as a Liason Engineer, Tool
     Planning, Sheet Metal Assembler, and Manufacturing Methods Analyst. In
     1963 he transferred to the Experimental Department, where he is still employed.
       Gerald and Mary Lou presently live in Wichita, and Mary Lou has continued
     her nursing career at Wesley Medical Center for the past 20 years. Gerald
     is a private pilot and active in the Beech golf league. They enjoy a vacation
     home near Gunnison, Colorado.
       The family is proud of their Kansas Heritage and have played a part in 
     the Barber County history as descendants of the early White and Peterie
     pioneer families.
